I sure am glad that I let my subscription expire a few years ago.

Their reviews on the new (at the time) 2008 WRX sucked giant donkey nuts. I had to look at the front cover to make sure that I didn't accidentally pick up an issue of Drive Performance because it was %1398412309487 fanboi marketing bull****. That right there was the nail in the coffin for me.

The real reason for keeping the magazine along with the DVD:
1) Ads, yes, there are those.
2) Can still go to newsstand
3) Magazine could get bigger in the future
4) Still have toilet material (yes, this was part of the actual interoffice discussion)

Now, whether or not the printed portion stays or goes in the short term (as long as Subiesport exists, there exists the possibility of coming back as a thicker magazine.) depends on the constructive feedback of our readers and advertises and how they choose to vote with their future ad and subscription dollars. We're currently taking each issue one at a time.

My Barbie Dreamland is a 100 page magazine with a full-length DVD in every issue. But, more realistically, we could look at a 32-64 page magazine with a DVD in each issue. That could certainly possible... once accountants stop sitting on invoices for 120 days+ and the industries meager revenues start to flow once more. (not just us, this is impacting all publishers this year.)
Ryan's last post in this thread.... his last log in date is 10/3...

maybe he's really, really busy for issue 27???

maybe it's let's have some feedback, ok i don't like the feedback, i'm taking my magazine/ball and going home

Wow, I actually got my refund in the mail last week! I was pretty surprised that they fully refunded my 2 year renewal, I figured I wouldn't even get anything.

I wouldn't say that. I wrote them about 2 months ago expressing my displeasure with the format changes, and requested a full refund. They sent me a confirmation of my cancellation and said that my refund request had been forwarded to the accounting department. It finally arrived 2 months later, so I'd pretty much written it off. I think if they were folding, they probably would have just kept the money.

We can only hope that they are scrambling to correct this mistake and come up with a revised paper format.

Accounting dept? Really? An entire department dedicated to accounting at subie sport?

Reminds me of this vendor that I was interviewing once, ...President and CEO his business card read - of a one man firm.

Accounting department my ass. Maybe they "lost the paperwork" and that's why it took them two months. Those damn lazy accountants!

Ok, I finally got my copy after some delays (various reasons, not Subiesports fault)

First reaction, like everyone else, is "wtf happened to the MAGAZINE????". The paper copy is a truncation of what it used to be. And by truncation, I mean that what is there, is still good ol' subiesport. What's not there is wtf. It's like getting a previous issue of Subiesport after your 2 year old has ripped out 70% of the pages and stuffed them down the toilet first.

I agree with others that this is a "bait and switch" with this changeover, with no forewarning. I subscribed for a magazine that I can carry with me wherever I go (toilet, bank line, dr's office, etc) and read at my leisure. This is the great value of a MAGAZINE. That we can carry it around willy-nilly and not worry about the "safety" or "requirements" of the mag because there aren't any. And giving readers fore warning in the preceding issues would have done WONDERS for reducing the surprise.

A DVD requires you be tethered to a DVD player of soon kind; be it a tv, portable unit, or a pc. This is NOT what a magazine is. The magazine goes so far to mention that the are digital copies of the video... this would have been the redeeming "portability" factor but when I went to copy these "portable digital copies" for my blackberry, they were NONEXISTENT. The only video were .cob files (the DVD player format). And no, I do not have a DVD ripper on hand. This needed to be a drag n drop operation.

That being said, the DVD was excellent. This is like subscribing to those Japanese OptionAuto DVD's. And really, anyone just tossing the disk is missing out. The DVD content was extremely interesting to me and I enjoyed it a lot. However, SUBIESPORT MUST COME THROUGH WITH PROVIDING DRAG N DROP PORTABLE DIGITAL COPIES OF THE VIDEO. It needs to be blackberry/iphone ready video formats.

And in regards to the "dying of traditional magazines": I'm confused at what exactly is so much more expensive about a print mag vs a dvd. Apparently, if it is the number of pages printed or the weight of the mag for mailing, then by all means switch to a cheaper paper. I don't care if the original Subiesport format was printed on comic book style paper. If even that doesn't work, then fine, I'll accept the new format. But like I mentioned earlier, you should have given warning.

BTW, I'd be interested in podcast/audio content (ready for ipod/iphone/blackberry/mp3player) if the dvd is to be the future.

I've been a loyal subscriber since the second issue, and loved every issue. The magazine used to be full of positive, well written articles. Recently however, it's been laced with hints of elitism and pessimism.

I'm extremely disappointed with these "digitalized" issues. If I recall correctly, I paid for a bi-monthly (as in, 6 issues per year) paper magazine that I can sit down and read. I am not receiving what I paid for, both in frequency and content.

"Who cares, he's only one person. We have plenty of other subscribers."

Plenty of other subscribers who paid for a bi-monthly printed magazine, and instead are receiving a CD with a folder of videos. I've discussed this issue with a few other Subiesport subscribers, and I can assure you that I'm not alone.

That said, I will not be resubscribing. Good luck in your future endeavors.
Agreed, we should buy tickets from the PGH airport to punch Ryan in the face.

So Ryan, I don't like the structure, not all of the content is even new. Part of the DVD even had info on your Legacy GT, I mean c'mon is that a joke? That was in an issue a long time ago.

I read the pamphlet, it is no longer worth being considered a magazine, that being said I understand that a pamphlet needs "published", but at 15- pages couldn't an intern do your job. Ryan this makes me very sad, I have either gone to the local bookstore (B&N or Borders) every single month or subscribed to your magazine over the years. So I have every issue from issue one, once I received it, I was angry that I knew nothing about it, then sad.

I loved the video of PIA's STI Forester swap, and most of the content on the DVD. That being said I had to wait almost two weeks to have the time to watch it. I could've just read the magazine at work on breaks, and at my leisure otherwise.

The DVD is the equivalent of a 150+ page magazine. Which is not financially feasible these days. Even "back when" we couldn't get Subiesport beyond 100 pages (and even that was subsidized out of my pocket) Hell, both Nissan Sport (no relation) and MC2 the Mini Magazines are around 60 pages these days. They both where previously at 100+ and I wouldn't be surprised if every enthusiast magazine was running on fumes at this point.

Traditional magazines are dying. The format is a walking zombie. I don't like it any more than you do, but we have to face reality that postage, ink and paper have increased significantly since we published issue #1. Postage alone has gone up at least 10 times (bulk is different than first class, which has only increased a couple times) -- and we haven't raised rates. At the same time, in the past year, the ad market has crashed. We're not talking skid landing, more along the lines of straight into a cliff at Mach 5 with still no sign of any real recovery. The traditional American model calls for Ads to cover the majority of the production costs. Subscription income covers postage. That's it. The model was broken to begin with. Now it's unsustainable.

Video is significantly more expensive to produce, content wise, than print. However, the physical production of the discs is lower. There is a potential for equilibrium here. That is if everyone doesn't go ape **** over the mere thought of something new.

I ask that you please look at the content of the DVD before posting your "thoughts" on it. I know, it's tough, we all like to pile on, but I would like to maintain a discussion... not a yelling match. I'd like to buck the trend and not have the vocal minority's voices be the only ones that people hear.

FYI: My dream is that the ad market will rebound, we can keep the DVD and increase the pagecount of the printed copy.
I unlike some people have looked at the content of the DVD before posting. I did pay for a magazine, a magazine that I have loved since ISSUE 1. I am very disappointed with Subiesport and you Ryan, because honestly I thought I was the only one who felt the way I did about this, but now as someone who has every issue since number 1 I feel sad that you, instead of addressing peoples legitimate concerns you instead ask stupid questions that only show your elitist attitude. I really wish I didn't live that far away from Washington so I could talk to you face to face... I am not a fighter but I would make an exception in this case, simply because of the way you treat your customers you are a complete jerk to these people who spend there hard earned money on Subiesport, which, correct me if I am wrong provides you with income. I have run several businesses, with clients that spend billions of dollars on print advertising. If you are concerned about the ad market dropping off why not do something about, go to companies that are not related to our cars, I don't think that anyone here would say hell no I don't want that Verizon add for 15 more pages of content. Have you even considered going that route. I mean you probably have exhausted everything because you are so much better than everyone else.

At this point Subaru's DRIVE Performance magazine is better than Subiesport.

I however will ride out my Subscription hopefully things get better, both with the print and not using old content to fill up a DVD.

At this rate, I think you'll be lucky to see another issue this year. Here we are in the second half of November, over 3 months since this thread was started... Do the math, how much did that lame DVD+Pamphlet cost you?

C'mon guys... it's not worth this level of insults and hostility.

While Ryan could have responded with a little more tact, and while this change in format was radical and UNWARNED, it does not require this level of belligerent insults. For certain, this will not help get the next issue out.

If they call it quits, I don't think they are required to refund anything.

^^ as someone who has every single issue I think that this lack of tact on their part should only be combatted with this type of critiquing.

Somehow I highly doubt that they even read this seeing as how we are seeing no responses which is the most frustrating thing IMO. They are shafting their readers....AGAIN and are leaving us dead in the water as to why. Everyone is done with them at this point and they wont last. Period.

feedback you say?

hmm...

well at 15 pages which include about five pages worth of ads....

....are you ****ing serious?

You want to blame rising costs?

D-Sport's December issue was 122 pages and included an awesome DVD...

If you want to know how people really feel about your issue/mag just read through this thread. Or the many others knocking Subie Sport for piss poor performance.

I'm glad I cancelled my membership after the first year.

ps.

GRM pwns you.
