Default JDM STI RA Gears & STI 6-Speed (Looking for opinions and advice)

I am looking for opinions on the JDM STI RA gears. I've done some searching and it looks like there are a lot of varied opinions.

I own an 02' WRX and its manufactured date is 04/01. So if I'm correct, I definitely own the weakest of the "glass trannys".

Anyways, I am getting ready to do a EJ205/EJ257 hybrid swap and am afraid of doing damage on the weak trans. I've been looking into tranny options and it looks like the RA gears would be a good choice for both the power I will be making and the budget I am in.

My tuner is expecting to pull about 300awhp and 350 ft lb torque out of the wrx. From what I've been reading that falls right into the reliability of the RA gears.

I've got about $2,400 to spend on a tranny solution. If I had the $ then I would simply go for the STI 6-speed. I'm open to saving up for it so if anyone can help me with the best option of the 6-speed that would help too. I'm basically just looking to know what MY would be best to fit with the 02'. I want to replace the least amount of parts possible during the swap.

All advice is appreciated, thanks guys.

Based on my experience, there is no legitimate "reliability range" for RA gears.

You'd want an 06 STi 6MT. It's almost a bolt-in replacement, needing just a few additional parts in order to work.

If you aren't drag racing, I'd go the 6MT route. It'll probably save you a little money over PPG's.

If you are drag racing, then I'd consider waiting and saving for a more reliable gearset.

Thanks for the info on the 6-speed, still considering just going for that in the long run. Any opinions on the legacy gt 5-speed?

I feel about the same on all OEM gearsets. I wouldn't try to run more than 280 wheel through any of them (other than the 6MT). Whether or not other people have been fine making more power, I see too many failures to feel comfortable with that.

one other option to look at is Mfactory's 1-4 gearset. Its been tested up to 375 ft/lbs without breaking. The only downside is that they are a little bit more expensive. Defiantly an option i'd check out if i were in your situation.

sorry to hijack but why would you not recommend the 6speed MT for drag racing use?

Mainly because of ratio's... I'm at the end of 4th gear in my 6 speed in the 1/8th mile... I may/may not get out of 5th in the 1/4...

Most Dog boxes will be a 1-2 and maybe 3 1/8th and 4th 1/4... Meaning you have 1 less shift which will shave at least .1 seconds off your times...

Reliablity with the 6 speed isn't the issue.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather NOT shift 4, maybe 5, times through the 1/4 mile.
