I'm not a fan of painting lights at all. The paint makes the lights dimmer and less visible at night or in bad weather (when your car needs to be seen the most). This recent tuner trend confuses the hell out of me because it just isn't safe. As its popularity grows I would expect to see police pulling people with tinted/painted lights quite often.

+1 esp the blackout kits I keep seeing. Did you mean to turn there because i couldn't see your blinker through that crap.

Mark my words... there will be a law about this passed soon enough.

Somebody with blacked out tail lights is going to get rear-ended at night or in a rain storm b/c the driver behind them could not see their brake lights or could not tell the difference between brake lights (bright) and running lights (dim). Generally if someone rear-ends you it is their fault, but I can see the other driver taking this to court and winning because the paint/tint covered and reduced the effectiveness of the vehicle's built in safety equipment. Might as well be driving with no lights at all, which is illegal. Then all of you tuners that blacked out your lights are going to have to strip them or replace them at your cost.

Yup and the law in my state says that the brake light ONLY has to be visible when the brake pedal is pressed. Which 08+ has no problem with since the leds are super bright

i've already had them.

they fade, and generally look like crap.

i want a full manufactured system that's red from the get-go.

So for those that did this a couple of years ago... how has it held up? Has it faded much and how did you tackle that issue over the clear coat?

Has anyone tried to remove this stuff from the tails yet? How did it come out? I'm hesitant to do it on my '11 and the shops want over $100 for red tint. Would be reassuring to know that if I mess up I can clean it off and try again.

I did this last weekend with the metalcast paint and rustoleum clear. It wasn't until the 3rd coat of clear that I noticed I messed up the masking on one of the lights....d'oh. Goof-off gets it off in a hurry and I repainted. After the lights dried for 24 hours, I wet sanded with 600 grit to get some runs out and to knock down the ridge at the masking edge. I gave all the lights another coat of clear over everything and called it good.

Did this the 2nd day of owning the car.
I think because it's in the garage it looks darker, but in person it looks like the above car.
This was done just like the above car as well.

What type/brand of overlay did you use? I went with Lamin-x and yes, it was a bitch but the second time around after I knew what I was doing it turned out alright. Also, their pre-cut ones are awful as they cut them a bit too small for a novice. If you use a universal sheet the extra material allows it to stretch more naturally and avoid the creases.

The bluebat overlays. I know if I re-did them I could get them to come out better...but painting just seems way easier and "almost" fail proof.

Okay, I checked in Lowe's, Home Depot, Michael's, and Walmart for this Duplicolor Metalcast spray paint. Nobody has anything even close to something that might work. Where has everyone gotten their paint? Probably easier just to order it at this point.
