When I took mine off, the big piece is the only piece that came off. Do I need to take off the rest of the pieces to make re-assembly easier?

Yep...put the piece at the top of the hatch back in first, then the sides, then the big piece. Like abui18 said. Piece of cake...I've done it 3 or 4 times already. lol

is this really easy as it looks? ive read the instructions like 10x's and am just worried about tearing apart the interior...partly due to my car being so new, but damn, the clear lights look sooooo much better painted red...

Hi. I've been surfing around this thread for a while now, and some questions come to mind...

I found these instructions: http://www.wrxtuners.com/forums/f73/...ainting-28918/, which explain a step not used here. That step is sanding the taillight. From what I understand, if you paint over a smooth finish, the paint won't stick, so peeling and fading might occur.

Looking at all the pics posted here, most of them don't have a smooth mirror finish, so it looks glossy, but on a semi-porous surface.

I don't have an issue with painting as I've done my fair share. I still build a custom dash trim for 02-07 Mitsu Lancers: http://forums.evolutionm.net/evo-how...ml#post8634646. And here's a thread I created when I painted my rear chrome trim: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1994982.

So... My question... Has anybody sanded their lights prior to painting? I know the guy on the link above did, but there are no "after a couple of months" shots. I keep reading complaints from some of you guys about the fading paint, so I'm analyzing if it's woth it in the long run. I don't want to be sanding, repainting and polishing my taillights every 2 to 3 months. I have a 2008 WRX, bought in Jan 2010, new from the dealer, never sold, and I've only washed it twice. Thinking that I'll have to be on top of this from time to time might get my hopes down and just leave it as it is.

Any points that might bring my hopes up?

when i painted my tail lights a while back, i didn't get a very good uniform spray when using the metal cast, because I was being a noob.

so some parts of my tailights are more shiny/wet than others.

i was wondering if i decided to redo them, do you think it's okay, to just repaint over the current clearcoat and what I already had on, instead of sanding everything off first?

I hope it was the last place you checked...it would seem foolish to check more places after you find it.

I did this on my car last week.. I put the first coat of clear on and they looked absolutely flawless, after i applied the second coat of clear the lights lost the perfect gloss they had, its almost flat looking.. It isn't too bad and i can deal with it for now but what would the solution be? Would a wetsand and polish clear that up? I'm thinking of doing that in the coming weeks once it gets a little warmer.

AlexAlex, do you have a diy thread or anything on getting the tails open? I'm pretty interested in black chroming the inside of mine.
