Bend it down the middle, fit one corner in, then carefully put the other top corner in. It took me a while, plus lots of cursing. Good luck.

Im going to try again after work, any tips on how to put back the inner hatch panel?
It's a lot easier if you take everything off and start at the top panel and work down towards the base(where the taillights are). They should just pull out from the clips and snap back in.

I have to agree and add that it begins to fade quite early. Sadly I am in the process of getting new tail lights because I did not like the way my tails were looking. I used Duplicolor MetalCast Red and Duplicolor clearcoat.

I would say that this method is best left to those with professional equipment, materials, and workspace. Your mileage may vary, of course, as it will with any DIY job. Yours may turn out excellent but give it a few months to fade, particularly on the curved edge surface on the top of the light.

Once I finish sourcing all my tail light units, I will be going the vinyl wrap route and not looking back.

It's surprising to me, given the demand, that a.) after market retailers haven't created better looking lights, and b.) Subaru hasn't red'ed these out from the factory.

I guess it's entirely based on cost when you have machines and processes that have made the same lights for what, 5 years? People are obviously still buying the cars.

I don't think there are enough hatches for it to be worthwhile, they are also led tails which are probably expensive to reproduce. I'm redoing mine today. Vht nightshades red works well as far as fading but I applied it like a retard so its all bumpy.

Don't forget that they also made regular impreza hatches with those lights and the outback sport. Lots more than you think running around.

Right but the vast majority of those owners probably haven't even noticed that they have tail lights

Here's the thing. Subaru is already finished producing this model, except in WRX/STI form, for what, another year? The Impreza/Outback Sport has moved on to another body style and it would not be cost effective for Subaru to redesign the light since the WRX will too. They should have done it in 2008 for the 2009 model year, but at this point they never will.

I'm MORE shocked that an aftermarket manufacturer hasn't jumped on it. I'm pretty sure consumers would shell out a couple bucks for units with red plastic lenses. I would.

For those on the fence about whether or not to do this DIY mod... I just finished sourcing new inner tail lights to replace the lights ruined by my DIY metalcast job. I thought mine looked pretty good from afar, but I am a perfectionist and I can't stand things that look cheap and are not OEM quality when viewed up close.

Quarter-mounted lights = $200 picked up from salvage yard in Los Angeles
Trunklid-mounted lights = $155 including shipping from a salvage yard in Iowa
Total = $355 just to get back to OEM

Can't you paint thinner it off and the. Overlay? Or couldn't you sand and overlay?

ug, i ran out of 3m adhesive remover which always seemed to remove paint from my tails w/o damaging them so I got a new can that looked different and the lens cracked from it which is the same thin brake clean does if you spray it directly on. I guess they changed the formula. Now its like really bad, gonna try to cover it up with VHT nighshades red but I think new tails are now defiantly in my future.

this was how it looked this morning when my first can of 3m adhesive remover ran out, you can see a little crack in the middle from when I tried taking the paint off with brake clean.

now with the new can the whole lens is pretty much shattered, but still holding water out apparently..lol

the cracking with brake clean only seems to occur when you spray it directly on the surface, spraying it on the rag first seems to be ok

I'm not going to lie, when I bought my sedan after my hatch the tails were a big factor. I guess we all have our things

honestly I'd probably just get a sedan if I had it to do over, the hatch isn't big enough for it to matter that much and I think it has more road noise lol

$130 in overlays and install from a pro. That's the real answer. Car is 26k+ and people are cheap so they half ass this paint method instead of paying a pro. I don't deny that the tails are hideous, but its a simple fix. There is no way that would sway me to a sedan when it is such an easy fix professionally.

this is true, although if you apply something meant for tails like nightshades properly from the start, instead of craft store garbage, you won't have an issue

anyways here is the abomination with 1 coat of nightshades red, hopefully 2 or 3 coats will cover the cracks lol

^ smart man, dsn112. Vinyl is the way to go.

Celery... I feel your pain. But sadly I don't think Nightshades really cuts the mustard, even if you do apply it "properly". I did the same thing as you, only with Metalcast. The problem is that the paint boogers-up and gets under the edges of the plastic light cover, so when you remove it the light is screwed, no matter what.

I hope this whole page serves as an intervention for those who want to cheap out and paint their lights. I did, and I paid the price. Sucks but true.
