Subaru Stars M/T 5speed transmission vent???

I recently changed my transmission fluid and I have learned through school that a blocked transmission vent can cause problems like lack of oil circulation, and blown seals as if your pcv gets blocked on your engine.
So has anybody notices a tranny vent on their car. I have a 2004 wrx.

Not an issue on the Subaru Manual Transmission. There is no vent, but the 5MT uses splash-oiling. That is, gear motion is what circulates fluid.

I mean, maybe you could consider the fill/check tube to be a "vent", though there is a plug with a sealing o-ring, so it isn't much of a vent.

Question tranny vent?????

but if there is no vent on it then there is not atmospheric pressure in there which would make the tranny case under pressure, and how would the oil circulate. Now you say that it uses splash oiling, now how exactly does that work, or is it as simple as something inside splashes the oil over the gears and other parts.

I was worried about the tranny having a vent so i drilled a small 1/8 hole in the dip stick. so people tell me what you think of this, and if youll can prove to me that it doesnt need a vent i will go seal the hole up.

thanks

You can still splash fluid under pressure... Ever shaken a can of soda?

Seal the hole. Fill a bottle half full of water, screw on the cap tight, and shake it. The fluid still splashes around. There is no vent but the fluid can still splash around...

Huh? It looks like there is a vent. On both LGT's 5MT and STI & SpecB 6MT boxes I had in my car. There is that rubber hose on the top of the tranny near the pitch stop mount.

The Vent Is Called The Dip Stick. The Dip Stick Hole Is Also The Vent Hole.

The Movement Of The Gears Splashes The Oil.

You Have A Problem With Shift Key Operation.

There is a separate vent. And btw 08+ STI 6MTs don't have dipstick...

On the WRX's, there is no vent. I just looked at an 09 LGT sitting outside, and didn't see a vent either (though the engine cover was on).

Proof there doesn't need to be a vent? Why would there need to be?

The 5MT has no oil pumping system. Oil is circulated by gear motion. Clearly, given the example of shaking a closed bottle of water, fluid can still circulate in a closed system. Even under pressure (which the inside of the case is NOT), fluid still flows (shaking a can of soda, for example).

The idea that a vent is required to circulate fluid is false.

Having that 1/8" hole in your dipstick tube is ONLY going to serve the purpose of allowing water and other contaminants into the trans case, shortening the life of the fluid.

The 6-speed DOES have a vent, but that's not what this discussion is about.

I got confused whether it's about 5MT or 6MT. I no longer have 5MT, but 6MT definately has a vent, even models without the oil pump...

That is correct, all of the STi 6mt's do have vents.

the 6MT uses an oil pump (haven't seen one apart, but it looks like maybe to get oil to the front differential)
