Thumbs up Another rally commercial

I was watching West Wing on NBC last night, and I caught a new Audi commercial. They show some fairly dramatic footage of an older Quattro getting tossed around a dirt track. Very cool. Yet another car maker pumping up their rally history.

I am glad that car makers that have rally heritage are finally showing it off, maybe we can ween a few people away from Nascar.

That comercial was kinda cool, but the thing i didnt understand was why they didnt show that many clips of the Quatro EVO-II. It was all the EVO-I in its Groupe-A spec. Not the big Group-B monster.

Hmm...maybe marketing decided that the EVO-II was to unlike the look of a real audi, and decided not to show it.

I thought they had a clip of the batmobile, too?

What's cool about that commerical, is that it's targeted at women! Michelle Mouton the rally babe was the voiceover. Not to mention the driver of the Group B quattros in question.

I guess Audi is going after the psycho-sideways dirt queen market with the TT. I always knew it was a secretary's car!

maybe Porsche and BMW will jump on the rally bandwagon and start making affordable AWD cars. I know i know it'll never happen but could you imagine how cool it would be to have AWD wars between the top automakers. We wouldn't have to stay up till morning to watch rally and we could actually race. In a perfect world....

Most of the stuff in the comercial was the EVO-I.

They actually show a few of the different rally cars in the commercial including a couple shots of their Group B cars.

I find it really interesting that shortly after Subaru puts a rally car in their commercials Audi does too. Audi has gone years without touting their rally history. The closest they came was their touring car ads.

Anyways, looks like rallying is going to be the next big thing. Of course we already knew that.

We're lucky to have AWD cars that are relatively light. If Porsche and the rest of the Euro gang are going to make some "affordable" (Dr. Evil quote with fingers) rally bred cars, I'd hope they would be under 3000lbs.

New Here,

Since we are talking car comm. using Rally has a theme.
How about Lexus using it to sell their IS.

I know Audi ruled the rally scene in the 1980's, but why did they quit ralling all together? BTW if an auto company dosen't or didn't rally, it should be illegal for them to market there cars as rally cars. This is just my opinion, you can disagree if you want.

In reply to Storer,

The reason Audi quit the rally scene. Has it were was for the reason of them going road racing in IMSA and Trans-AM
series.
In the mid '80s to early '90s. In IMSA they raced in the GT catogory. and after win two championship in row.
And pretty much dominating the series for those two with quatto and the series putting on a weight penlity of 190 lbs., restricting their inlet size, and having their cars run on smaller tires.
They IMSA and went to Trans-AM and did the samething there has well. Or it could be the other way around they started with Trans-AM and then went to IMSA GT.

I was a kid at the time.

And after a that they went back to Germany and England to run in the Super Touring series.
Also at the time of the quitting the rally scene. They said at the time that pretty much proved what they wanted to prove by racing in rallying.
And taking the overall at Pike's Peak in the '80s while having the first car break into the 10 minute range their.

Here's a funny one you'll appreciate...
Mitsubishi (the folks who think we wouldn't buy any Evos here in the USA) back when they first started selling on their own, ran a commerical of their cars with various shots of them being thrashed. One of the shots was of a rally car jumping, probably at 1000 Lakes. Set to some rock music, it was pretty cool.
Except the ad agency, not really hip to car appearances, had the shot of a jumping Lancia Delta Integrale instead of a Galant
The commercial aired this way for several weeks until it was spotted and reported in Autoweek. The following week it was shown with corrected footage of an actual Mitsu, though I could swear it wasn't as fast at the Lancia :

Audi did compete in the "new" Group A WRC up through 1990 or so, first in the big 200 body, then in the 80/90 body. In fact, Alex Erisoty has an ex-Jimmy McRae Group A Audi 90 20V running in the U.S. ProRally series. Cool car.
