Default Linseed oil? sti rear end WTF?!

So I called the dealer looking for some rear end fluid for my 2005 sti.

One says they only have it in bulk, and I don't want to buy 100 bucks worth of oil for a change I might do 3-4 times in the life of the rear end.

The other says it's linseed oil...? and it's 24 bucks a quart. Anybody hear this before? Should I ask specifically for the oil I need? I didn't have the owners manual with me when I called so I wasn't sure what it was called specifically. Any help would be great.

Nate

Linseed oil is for high temp frying...of food .

EDIT: Nevermind, linseed oil is a flax oil nutritional supplement....I was thinking grapeseed oil...but still, that guy was a bit off with his wording .

So the tech was off his rocker?

He specifically said linseed, at first he said, "is that that some sort of seed oil?"

*sigh* I'll check with the other dealer again.

Thanks for the replies.

As said, NOT linseed oil.

The dealer that 'only has it in bulk' should be just what you need, unless they want to be un-helpful. If they truly have it in bulk (which would normally mean in a 275 gallon shuttle tank or larger, but sometimes places with drums call them 'bulk'), they must go through a lot of it, and they should be willing to sell you a quart or a gallon or whatever right out of their container.

However, some places mistakenly refer to 35-lb. pails (sometimes called 5-gallon buckets) or even gallon containers as 'bulk.' Aside from the fact that those places don't know jack about oils & lubes, they're almost certainly not going to open a container just to sell you a quart or two.

OTOH, I've never seen anything anywhere that someone was able to show that the Subaru fluid is actually special or different in any way whatsoever. So, go get yourself whatever you want.
