Default Kamak turbos

Preface: Please do not post unless you have useful and reliable information (no posts like, it is just chinese crap).
My Blouch 20G is blown. It went downhill slowly and I am looking at upgrades (my CHRA may be broken is why).

So I am looking into turbos. I will not shell out 1800 for an ATP turbo, although I would love one, it is just not in the budget. This turbo is at the edge of the budget.

I have the fuel system to support E85 to 400+ WHP.

Now looking for a new turbo around 1000 dollars is tough to hit these goals even on E85. My 20G could do it, but now it is blown (mostly due to overboosting, reinstalling it many times as well).

Kamak website: link

Spec sheet on bolt on turbos: link

Turbo for sale on ebay: link

Details:

Quote:
KAMAK SUBARU IMPREZA STi TD06SL2 Garrett 60-1 Turbo

n Bearing System: Journal Bearing

n Cooling System: Water & Oil

n Turbine Housing Nozzle Area: 8cm^2

n Turbine Diameter: 54mm/61mm

n Turbine Blades: 11

n CFM:780@1.0 Bar

n Compressor Wheel: Garrett 60-1 76mm/59.5mm

n HP:500 HP

n Balance:150,000 On VSR

Features:

1. Turbine wheel & turbine housing hybrid design:

Considering quick-boosting so that turbine wheel just comes with 11 blades which is an very rare type, on the other hand, wheel size of TD06SL2 is larger than TD05H so that can keep the top end speed and get more horse power.

2. Thrust Bearing:

360 degree trust bearing that combines with thrust collar and trust ring doesn’t like a stander one, so that it can providers more tolerance of loading pressure at high engine RPM.

3. Compressor wheel:

Garrett 60-1 compressor wheel has more compressor efficiency and comes with smaller centre pillar than original MHI 20G improves air-flow.

Following Included:

n SUBARU TD05H turbo Oil & Water Install Kit
I have done several web searches on these turbos. Most forums are riddled with "It is another Chinese ebay junk turbo". However several people posted that they have used the Kamak branded turbos on Mitsus and Subarus with good results. Several forums mentioned people in Australia running Kamak turbos on their Subarus with great results. Leslie you there?

I doubt anyone here has experience with these, but perhaps someone does. If you have experience with any Kamak turbo (please do not chime in unless it is a Kamak turbo) I would appreciate your views on the turbo. I know Vlad has experience with their rebuild kits from doing a search.

The pricing of the turbo is slightly less expensive than more known names such as FP and Blouch, but it is not as cheap as the unbranded ebay turbos.

Kamak seems to be based in S. Korea with one US distributor.

Thanks,

Gabe

Edit:

After researching, Kamak is based out of Taiwan and makes many rebuild parts as well as the Japanese "Kinugawa" turbos. Read further for links on people who have used them successfully on Subarus, Nissans and Mitsus. Seems to be a good turbo.

Hmm after reading about them and their website they look very well put together. Plus they are using a garrett wheel. I would deff give it a shoot.

So they are using an 11 bladed turbine wheel? Sounds a lot like the same wheel FP used to use in their Green, and Deadbolt called their "Fatboy" wheel.

You know, you could always rebuild your 20g with a new CHRA for $500ish. Just throwing that out there...

It is a TD05 and I kind of want to upgrade.

My fallback is the rebuild.

If you're trying to do this on the cheap why not just get your 20G rebuilt? Throw a stocker on there in the meantime and go with a $350 rebuild.

If you know me at all, you know I like to experiment. My STi has been a testbed that many people have learned from. An expensive testbed. Sure, I would love a Green or an ATP turbo, but those are already known to be good. I have some method behind my madness. Plus, my wife has an 06 STi that may someday inherit the 20G I have when I rebuild it.

The latest example of my testbed efforts is the new design topfeed AP rails. There are some issues with the way AP assembles the AN adapters, but other than that they are great rails! Look at the Parts Review section for that review.

Ok we are getting a bit off topic. Her (Tess on these forums) STi is Full stage 2+, built motor, and the road dyno is in proven power bragging. It scoots for a stock turbo STi on 93.

Her mod list:

Stage 2 shortblock (dropin CPs, came with car)
Full TBE (came with the car)
TXS TMIC
Samco inlet and MAF
APS 65 mm CAI
Cobb sport springs (came with car)
Khumo XS tires (they are sticky)

Nice Wes. I was doing around 350 on my TD05 8cm^2 20G on gas with the topmount according to the road dyno.

The TEC 20G can't be any better than a Blouch. It does not have the same Green upgrade parts either.

How are you liking the STi? Totally different than a WRX huh?

I bought one.
Its not chinese crap, its taiwanese crap...big difference.
I hear that some names in import tuning get their turbos from them and then use their "rebranding" service and sell them as their own. Don't ask me, no law suits here.
Nissan crowd has run them with success for a while. Friend with a sylvia is going in his third year with one.

and as someone else said, just by the rebuild kit from them.

It's exciting to see other turbo options that are similar to overpriced name brand ones. Keep up the R&D for us!

Yes Kamak is based in Taiwan. I did a bit more research and saw the same comments about the US builders using Kamak parts (or re-branding). The EVO/DSM guys and Nissan guys are loving them.

I am sold.

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newb...-10-turbo.html

That guy had all the Kamak parts on his EVO except the exhaust housing and bent a rod. Turbo was fine though. Definitely sold after doing more research. Looks like there is finally a good alternative to the cheap Chinese turbos. I have been to Taiwan and I trust parts made in Taiwan.

A green for 1150? No problem! I can even use some Kamak parts from them to rebuild my small 20g. Also, it is awesome that they carry actuators, and all the other parts to build or fix your own turbo. They do balance the bolt on turbos as well.

Although I have to wait for my b-day which is in October.

another option is to get the japanese venue and get Kinugawa brand. it's about the same cost and they have a Td06SL hotside and the 20g comp wheel... turbine is also 8cm. If I didnt't run out of time I was going to take that route myself....

so gabe, you don't by chance have a used STI turbo in good condition laying around do you? after all, when I was helping with your WRX tunes with the testing and logging hook a brotha up.

Good idea, I'll look into that. I sold my stock turbo a long time ago.

Gabe

Edit: Those turbos seem like they may be made by the same manufacturer (Kamak) with their re-branding service.

http://cgi.ebay.com/TD06SL-20G-Upgra...4.c0.m14.l1262

This is 200 more dollars for the same thing. The pics are identical, except for the nameplate. Looks like we found the distributor and the lowest price Green!

Not sure about those. Look at the Kinugawa link here. They have info on them. It is the same turbo. It is just re-branded.

Not saying that this is an FP Green. Just saying it has similar parts. I am sure FP uses slightly different parts and does not just re-brand.

However, you can tell from the ebay pics that the Kinugawa turbos are in fact made by Kamak. In the 240sx forum link you can see one of the turbos has a Kinugawa label on it instead of the Kamak label.

At least they are not cheap Chinese turbos. They are the cheap Tawain turbos that some people thought were Japanese turbos. They sell well in Britain it seems. It does make me wonder if some of the USA guys are re-branding these as well however.

Also, it seems people are having good luck with them on other platforms.

lots of good info here.

and its true. Taiwan crap is still better than chinese crap. You'd be suprised at how much hi tech computer stuff that taiwan produces. They dont dominate the market like they used to in the 90s, but during that time production, quality control improved dramatically. I hope these turbos work well.

There's at least one guy that has been running a Kamak/Kinugawa turbo for a little while with good results:
