2.5RS Head Gasket Replacement
'03 2.5RS (SOHC)
I got the bad news last week that my hgs need to be replaced. They are leaking oil out the bottom of the engine. Rather than pay the $1500 - 2000 to have a dealer or shop do it, I'm going to undertake it myself. I plan on doing a step-by-step guide with lots of photos of the project but I need some advice before I start... 1. Anyone know of any good guides to do it on any forums? 2. I already got my timing belt changed a couple thousand miles ago so I don't think it needs to be switched again, but what else should I change while I've got the engine apart? 3. I've never removed an engine before, but I'm debating between removing the engine to do the gaskets vs. leaving it in.... any input? 4. I'm also debating whether or not to send the heads to the local machine shop to have them inspected for warping... I don't know much about this so advice on what to have done at the machine shop would be great appreciated!!!!! Thanks for your help! I plan to start this beast next week sometime...

I say,
1-pull the engine 2-get/rent an engine hoist 3-an engine stand is nice as well 4-ScoobyMods.com has a "how to" 5-NASIOC has a lot of info as well I have pulled my share of Suby engines (I am actually pulling one right now). |

I advise having the heads checked. A good machinist will use Prussian blue. Have you thought about replacing your valve stem seals while your at it? |

Valve Stem Seals...
Yeah I've thought about just doing an overhaul since the whole thing will be apart... but I don't really want to mess with the valves. I will check them obviously and replace whatever is necessary though.
Anyone know of a good place to get Subaru Genuine Parts? (other than the stealership...) |

mark your timing belt before you remove it. the original lines may have worn off.
you may want to use copper spray on the gaskets to help prevent oil leakage again. Do a search on what general opinion on that is since I may be talking out of my ass. |
