Default Weather Stripping on Splitters

Hey all just had a quick question. I apologize if this seems stupid lol. I just aquired a set of STi Side Splitters from the classifieds and Im going to need to paint them. The weather stripping is starting to fall off. What purpose does the stripping serve ? Can I just take it off ? lol. Any risks of running the splitters without it ?

It both asthetically closes the gap between the splitter and the bumper and prevents air from coming in between them and the bumper. You would probably be fine without them, but it would probably look better with them.

As thin as those little strips are, I would just tape them off to paint the splitters, just to keep from trying to peel them off without damaging them and then having to glue them back on.
