Default 245/40/18 kumho 710 vs.295/30/18 A6

I'm currently running "AS" on 08 Sti on 245 Kumho 710 and considering switching to 295 A6 next year. You guys think my pig heavy Sti would benefit from bigger tires?

Yes. Kuhmo's tend to run small anyways and are the slower of the 2 brands currently.

I would say when looking at the 295/285 hoosiers pay attention to the diameter and make your decision. The 285's are wider and shorter. That may not be good for a STi but it's great for my wrx. Something to consider though.

I would say our cars should be on nothing less than 275's. They are fat, as you mentioned. Hope you have a good tire budget, I'd imagine a camber challenged stock car will eat hoosiers.

Based on thread title there's no comparison between the two.

I agree with Greg. I ran 245/40R17 A6s on my WRX last year in stock trim, and being camber challenged, it was difficult to keep the tires from cording the outer edge. Fortunately, we can swap the tires front-to-rear, and then flip them on the rims in order to eek out as much tire as possible, but it's still $$$.

I know Greg uses the 285s while I use 295s. I think with the different gearing on the STi, you will want to consider the effects of the shorter tire there as well as the tread patch.

Is it difficult to mount 285 A6 on a 8.5 rim? I heard it is really difficult to mount 285 V710. I only have one degree camber in the front, but with a 32mm bar it doesn't seem that bad. I'm running 45 hot in the front and it's right above the wear mark on the tire. You guys suggesting the A6 will cord pretty quick even if the tire wear is above that wee triangle?

I was going to post something about Greg's car, but he was post #2. I'm currently on 245 Kumho's. In a less competitive region where I came from, they did rather well. I was often top 5 in raw times, usually top 3 in pax depending on who showed up.

In my new region (Indy) which is super competitive I have trouble keeping up with other cars (in PAX, not many ESP players here). I feel that one thing hurting me is not taking advantage of the wide tire allowance ESP gives me.

Until the Subaru challenge this past Saturday, I hadn't seen a true ESP WRX (wide tires AND diffs). Greg was ahead of everyone by a lot. He had three things I didn't, 1: much more experience, 2: wide tires, 3: diffs. Driving skill aside, there were places on course where I simply couldn't go faster due to lack of grip. Greg didn't slow one bit. No tap on the brakes, nothing. The tires simply hooked.

When these tires are dead, I plan to go to 275's on a 8" rim until I can get wider rims.

Your profile says you have an 08 STI. They can fit an 285 up front no problem.

It will definitely benefit from bigger tires, but you need to stay on top of rotating/flipping them or they will cord after 3 or 4 events.

I would rotate them front to rear every event and flip them on the wheels every other event to maximize life.

Our tire guy hated us for it, but the 285 Kumho did eventually fit, and lasted WAY longer than the Hoosier 295.

Honestly if I still had my 08 STI I'd be planning on going to BSP or STU as it is an awful AS car IMO, especially when considering the tire budget needed to be competitive.
