Default Bradford Persistent Agent - WTF is this?

Come this fall, in order to connect to the campus network at my school I must install this software as well as approved virus protection.

I googled it and am still in confusion as to what the hell it is and isn't. The name alone sounds evil. Any clues?

The first PDF I found describes it as an emergency notification program...Others don't.

It's probably something that scans your hard drive's contents and reports back to the U. Find a different school.

That's what it sounds like.

It seems as if it checks compliance to system updates, virus updates, etc. You scan every set amount of days and either pass or fail which determines your connectivity.

There are other components to it though that look a little intrusive...

We had a program in the dorms my freshman year like that too. It pretty much blocks programs like Limewire from downloading anything. We got away with torrents though. Don't really know what your program does exactly, but ours never reported anything unless you were using an absurd amount of bandwidth, and then they would check up on you or just disable your connection for a while.

We also used programs that would let you download music off of other peoples' iTunes in your network, which happened to be every person living in our dorm who would share their iTunes. Worked just as well. It was called something like ourTunes IIRC

This. It is from Bradford, and while any program can become intrusive, this is mostly harmless. Look at it this way, you really WANT this running on everybody else's computers to protect the network and therefor you. Without this and other solutions things like welchia can bring down a network.

HMMM...I'm guessing they won't go overboard with it then considering it's the first year of usage, plus we're a very small school. <2000 students.

I used ourtunes freshmen year as well. I got nearly 13,000 songs from it. Absolutely amazing program.

.torrents and using a proxy were already blocked on campus though, so I used Torrent Relay which worked like solid gold.
