I've had two well informed people tell me that they will pass our emissions tests, both sniffer and on AWD rollers as long as they have a CAT. One of them told me that the JDM engines actually run cleaner because of the turbo.

andrew w/ 2 cats on it they should pass no problem...with a FULL USDM up-pipe and down pipe you will not have ANY problems getting passed in your state. the car would in no way shape or form run cleaner because of the turbo...that's just down right impossible. but anyhow i'll talk to you later/

Reason for it being impossible to run cleaner w/ the turbo besides worse fuel economy:
Catalytic converters convert certain gasses and unburned fuels into more environment friendly gasses. Cats need to be at a certain temperature to work properly in converting the engines emissions. Since turbos steal exhaust, and the exhaust is needed to heat the cat, it takes longer for the cat to reach optimum operating temperature, thus your car polutes more.

I've heard that no JDM engine will ever pass (legally) in CA no matter how clean it runs.

Not true MagicMT,
You just need to go see a BAR referee and not your basic smog tech. See the thread w/ej20 swap pics in the BAIC forum for more info

I did read that, but it's not really applicable. That thread is talking about a USDM 02 WRX engine into a GC8, which is legal. From what I've read, you can swap any US engine into any US car as long as it's newer. No JDM.

Mike

PS- I'm talking about CA laws. You can probably do whatever the heck you want in other states.

Yeah I was wondering this too. I live in CA, and I want to swap in one of the JDM engines in to my GC8, but I also hear that it will not pass emissions in CA. So I don't wanna pay for an engine that I won't be able to legally swap in. But if the JDM engine swap is illegal in CA, I think I'm goning to try and go for the US EJ20 swap into my car.

I'm pretty sure that any non US engine is illegal in a street car in the US.

They pass because they are paying to pass. How do I know? My friend has a JDM engine swapped Integra. And his car will not legally pass smog.
