Angry Broke a rim today!

Went out to play a little bit and just see how bad the roads are. I turned into a school parking lot to turn around and head home. I had to turn right into the lot, then immediately left between two islands. I wasn't going fast at all, probably only 10mph or so, and as I turned back to the left the tail swung out real slow. I didn't goose it because I was afraid that would send the tail out more towards the island on my right, I was just hoping I had enough forward motion to drift past that island before the tail swung out too much. Well, I didn't have enough speed apparently, and I wacked the curb with the passenger side rear wheel.

No big deal, I've hit curbs harder than that before last winter, just scuffed the hell out of the edge of the rim. Well, I stop the car before heading back out onto the road, hop out to take a look and a BIG CHUNK OF THE RIM IS MISSING!! Dammit!! And I mean BIG - about 4" long, and 1-1.5" wide, right down to the bead of the tire! I couldn't believe it. Fortunately the thing was still holding air, so I was able to go to Sears and do some tire swapping.

What really sucks is that now I only have 3 extra 2.5GT rims and 4 extra tires. I had been intending to sell the extra set of rims/tires in a week or two, but now I don't have a complete set. Aaarrrgghh!!! What a bummer.

went out for a nice 4 hour drive, drifting and getting sidewas as much as possible, there is like NO ONE out in this stuff. Its like driving down a crapy dirt road, they are not plowed and bumpy as all could be. i had a blast, i only lost a little paint off the bumper do to hitting a HUGE chunck of if in the deep snow

Thumbs down

I'd have to agree, seeing how I might have been an intended buyer. It's all good.

i lost it today on the ice. I saw the guy infront of me try to stop, and his ass end was coming around, so I hit my brakes to avoid hitting him, all I felt was the abs. That wasn't a cool feeling..I looked my gf and said "ohh shi** Jeanette," But I managed to turn the wheel and get the car over onto the curb...hard hit, but LUCKLY (thank god) my bumper did not hit, I just rolled up on the curb,stopped..laughed for a sec..backed up and went on my way again. Kinda worried at first but all is fine
Later on in the day I got stuck in da snow..that kinda sucked somehow I lost my freakin ice scrapper in the snow! BAahhaahh Oh well..over all a good day

I've been inside two different wheel repair shops here in CT. I was quite amazed (or is it shocked) by some of wheel damage I saw. On one occasion I remember asking the guy, "You're going to fix that"? He said, "Yep".

One place is the Wheel Shop in Windsor Locks. Just down the street from Ty Subaru. I had them repair a bent stock wheel from my MY99 RS. It was bent after hitting a pot hole. I ended up going back to have that same wheel straightened again. Its seems ok now, but he charged me both times even though I hadn't hit anything. The first time he rushed the job on my behalf, so it may be partly my fault that it didn't get done right the first time.

Before going back to the Wheel Shop the second time, I went to New England Wheel Repair in East Windsor, CT. It was the guy from that shop who convinced me to go back to the Wheel Shop. He said it was likely that it wasn't fixed right the first time and that the other guy should re-fix it without charge.

Seeing repaired wheels at both shops, I'd say they both do pretty good work when given the time. The wheels come out looking as good as new.

I only had to have my wheel straighten. No welding and no painting, clearcoat, or other finish. It cost me about $85 including tax. I believe it would be around $120-140 for wheels needing welding and refinishing.

Even though I didn't actually have a wheel repaired at New England Wheel Repair, they would be my first choice. The guy just seemed a little more up front and honest.

Thanks for the heads up. I actually just got back from F&S Auto (Subaru salvage yard) and I picked up a GT rim from a 2000 GT wagon for $150. Edit: and that price includes a trusty RE92 with tons of tread left.

I would be interested to see if one of the shops you mentioned would be able to fix the rim, and how much it would run. A little JB Weld and it'll be fine!

Pat, good score on the rim.
This place seems to have pretty good prices: www.aaarims.com

$180 for a reworked Subaru RS or Legacy Gt ($10 shipping too).
