Default Accident claims four lives

Accident

I read about this on KSL too and apparently they were traveling at 97 mph when they went off the road, but noone discovered the accident till 3-4 hrs later.

"Utah County sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon says the crash is believed to have happened sometime between 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., but the accident was not discovered until 7 a.m.

Deputies say the 16-year-old driver was traveling at 97 miles per hour on Emma Park Road when he missed a turn in the road near mile marker 221 (Highway 6) and crashed and flipped over the barrier.

The teen's three passengers--a 13-year-old girl from Payson, a 16-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man from Orem--all died instantly. The driver died shortly after he crawled out of the car.

Sheriff's deputies have not yet released the names of the victims. They said everyone except the 13-year-old was wearing a seat belt."

Also what a waste of a Lotus Elise

I find it interesting from reading the comments on KSL that everyone is about ready to lynch the dad for "racing" up the canyon, but some kids are driving like idiots and they all die and there is nothing but sympathy for the everyone.

Maybe it's because one was in a sports car and people have a general disdain for sports cars, like they have for sport bikes?

If you crash at 97 mph and die you will too. How was that insensitive, they reported what happened.

He and his son sound like the guy that came on one of the Audi Thursday night meet cruises up Emmigration. And if they are the same people, I hate to say it, but it's no wonder. He tried "cat and mousing" me in the 911 and almost crashed. Unfortunately with performance cars, especially as you go higher up, people seem to have less and less experience and feel like they can drive faster and faster.

I think he just means it sounds like they are blaming the accident on the fact that the 13-year-old snuck out with 3 older boys. And that's not right. If she was 18 and didn't "sneak out" do you think they still would've said it that way?

No, because in your example she didn't sneak out. Why would they said she snuck out if she didn't? Duh!

The fact is, kids sneaking out for a late night joy ride and paid for that joy ride with their lives. Thus what they said was correct.

A few weeks back, I was coming down ogden canyon rounding a corner, when I was nearly stuck by an orange lotus elise ( driving stupidly fast). The driver was an older guy. I would just bet this is the same guy.

I was told by most of the guys there that it was technically an Audi/VW meet. So my bad! Regardless it was always a fun time, kind of like a mini-Cars and Coffee (large mix of cars). Sad that that happened. I told him to hit up the track and autocross in it, but he seemed hesitant about taking his nice car to those events... Hope him and his son wind up alright though, his son seemed especially cool for a 12-13 year-old.

Kid, only one of them did any sneaking. So what you are saying is that the sneaking of the one 13 year old girl directly caused the accident? (And my point was that there wouldn't be any sneaking in my example, to see if what you meant was that the sneaking was the direct cause of the accident). What if she were 25 and still had to sneak out? Sneaking still the cause?

Anyway, my point is they didn't pay for sneaking out by getting in the wreck, they paid for driving recklessly by getting in the wreck.

Only reason I know is the guy described has a 13 year old, the boy was about that old when I met the guy an PC confirmed he went to those "meets." Orange is probably one of the more common colors of Lotus, I know it's the color I see the most.

I get what you're trying to say, but your logic is kind of backwards. The sneaking wasn't a causal factor in the crash, but it was a causal factor in the 13-year-old girl's death. Had she not snuck out, she wouldn't have been in the car when the driver drove recklessly. So while reckless driving/speeding caused the crash itself, the sneaking led in part to the 13-year-old's death.

Um, no again. There were 3 kids in that car. One was 13, two were 16 and one was 19. Three were out past legal curfew. The girl might have been the only one to have actually "snuck out", but the driver and the other two under ages KIDS were all out illegally and more than likely without parental consent.
