Question RI Peeps - Inspection and License Suspension?

Hey, I need some help, or at least some input on anyone that may have been put in this situation before. My girlfriend moved back in state ~2 months ago and less than one month ago registered her car and got her RI license. What she didn't do was get an inspection - we were working through a few silly things like replacing license plate bulbs prior to making the appointment.

Well, today she gets a letter from the DMV stating that since she failed to get her car inspected that her license and registration is suspended at the beginning of next month. She's freaking out, and I'm trying to figure this whole thing out.

1) I can't find this rule on the DMV website. I've found the 5 day statement, but nothing on failure resulting in suspension. I found a sentence in the RI General Laws stating the DMV may suspend a registration if a car is deemed unsafe, which I guess they could invoke because it wasn't proven otherwise in an inspection. Anyone know if this rule is actually listed anywhere?

2) Was she supposed to have received a warning prior to the suspension letter? Seems pretty excessive to go straight to suspension - although I'm sure this makes it easier for them to collect $$$.

3) Has anyone talked to the suspension people/DMV about the same situation and know the way to resolve it? I assume that the car will need to be inspected and she may need to pay fines, but if this is all done prior to the start date of her suspension is life "good?"

Really - no warning by the registration people about suspension, nothing on the website I can clearly see and no warning about being past due and then BAM! a suspension letter seems pretty stupid to me. I know the rules is the rules, this just seems excessive. Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated.

Been through this haha, I actually got my car inspected in time and my reg STILL got suspended and I found out AFTER I got pulled over, car got impounded etc etc. Im not sure how to resolve it the easy way, but my way was long and expensive.

Get it inspected before the end of the month and bring proof to where the form(s) say they need to be brought to so it doesn't get suspended.

It's more of a warning saying you have 20 days to get it done.

License Plate/Rregistration can be suspended.
Drivers License = No.
You just couldn't drive that car until you get it inspected.

Yep, thanks guys. Called the Safety & Emissions people and they confirmed that KC wrote - if the car is inspected before the suspension date there will be no penalty and we'll be on the up and up. Glad to hear. The doc they sent her was very vague though and the info the provided insufficient to figure things out. Even the guy I talked to wasn't much help, I'll have to make sure to call back after a few days after the inspection to ensure it all cleared. Thanks!

I would have the car towed to that location for inspection, Ive only been pulled over once in RI for speeding and the cop was a total dick, but anyway, just make sure they are not going to issue an infraction for driving an "unsafe" vehicle on the road................... I would also contact your lawyer just keep her/him in the loop.

GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you need and inspection performed, there are many garages in RI that act as certified inspection stations.
At one point in RI you also had to have the local Police Department do a vin check on the car. A cop would have to come out to the car and physically check the VIN on the dash. I'm not sure is this is still required since I haven't had a new car lately, but you may want to ask if a VIN check is also a requirement before it's too late.

you do need a vin check to register a car, if the car was previously registered or purchased out of state.

it takes 5 minutes and costs (iirc) $20 bux in pawtucket. Hours for anything DMV related are messed up. So expect to skip class, work or anything you have planned to take care of it early.

The VIN check still exists... and that's the annoying part. I know at least in Portsmouth it can only be done at the most absurd hours during the day during certain days only, and no other time. I believe the restriction is only on newer cars from out of state sales.

Its only getting worse since they closed many DMVs locations.
The lines at the remaining DMV locations are getting absurd.
