crank sensor. may still be the flywheel. may be fine metal shavings on the tip of the sensor. may be an imperfectly machined crank pulley/tone wheel. may be lack of grounding on the engine harness (corrosion, etc).

straight below the alternator. and i'm talking about the cogged pulley that drives the timing belt that has the tone wheel on it. not the accessory damper.

also my note about ground is more in depth. if the threads of the bolt/frame/block are corroded where the strap goes through it will create a voltage drop/resistance issue. sensor response is greatly diminished by poor ground. ie; an o2 sensor that would typically switch 8-10 times in a 5k mS interval will only switch 4-6 times from poor ground. this will cause fueling issues due to the pcm receiving what it believes to be a lean response when the engine is actually just fine. weak ground. on a crank sensor it will show up as a low return voltage. resulting in what the pcm perceives as the crank slowing down/misfire.

so in other words the sensor is buried under the timing cover?

It's accessible from the outside. You an see it mounted to its' boss if you peak down there. 1/4 drive ratchet and a shallow 10mm to take it out.

Anybody know of a good place to try out some snow tires? Old parking lots etc, somewhere I'm not likely to get a ticket for driving through? I dont wanna do anything stupid or dangerous, just curious to see how good the subie is with the new setup

Something like that

I'm coming from two snowstorms with 17" aging summer tires, to 16" wheels with blizzaks. So now I'm curious to see how good these cars really are.

If you are on Facebook you should join the Madison Subaru group as Shannon over at Don Miller East can tell you where to go play w/o issues.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to drop by and share my excitement of being an owner of a 92 Miata. It's so slow, almost unbearably slow, but I'll stick with it. I won't be driving it daily until summer comes around.

Kyle, had I seen that Forester you have for sale earlier, I'd probably be driving that instead.
