Check out this jackass:

I had him behind me on the road the other day, blinding everyone of course. He was returned in kind with my Hellas.

I for one would love to mount a mylar mirror on the dash of my car and aim it so it reflects at compensator truck height but in the mean time my Hellas work just fine as well. Before anyone gets points though I want to steer this thread back to projects and technical questions about lighting. I may even post a few pics of what I have in mind for my next little project-maybe my Wife will let me use her early x-mas/birthday present to take them! Lol!

I was just thinking about my fogs...I wonder if I could use the DEPO projectors we took out of the headlights and somehow mount them in the fogs and throw a PnP kit in them. They would at least have a cutoff then.

hmmmm.....

Yeah it helps to have a cutoff in fogs, but not that much. If you can get them to fit it'd be pretty awesome. Might as well add hids as well which don't cost that much for the kit. I have 4300k fogs injected with a yellow gas so it's almost 3000k. Big difference in rain and snow or fog.

Going on a little photo shoot tomorrow night. If you or Aleut want to join let me know.

I work 'til nine, but if you'll be out that late I might be up for swinging by. Let me know when/where and I'll talk to the wifey.

Scott-sorry I didn't get back to you. I was crazy busy the rest of the day. Let me know when might be a good time for you to swing by-maybe after Thanksgiving? Angela might even have more girly stuff to do with Massa. I have been kicking around a few ideas about the backup lights and if you want I can take a look at the Depo projectors and your stock fog locations. Wes-sadly I will be busy tonight but I would like to have another HID mini meet sometime. Now that we have a proper camera I should be able to get some nice pics-it would be a good excuse to mess around trying night shots and just hang out. Comparision shots would be nice to get as well!

I'll probably hold off then, just let us know when.

Sounds good. If you and Scott could let me know what day(s) work for you that'd be great. Monday and Tuesday nights are busy for me but the rest of my week is usually open. I work Monday thru Friday so weekends are best for me but weekday evenings would work too. When we find the optimal day or evening I will post it up!
Scott-you may want to hold off on the Depo projector redo till you see my next project.

I am curious about the "capping" that the Turnagain guy offers. Any thoughts on that theory?

The theory is that these caps will cut down or eliminate the glare that occurs when HID capsules are installed in halogen reflector housings. Nothing could be further from the truth. All halogen DOT spec lights are designed to throw up a little glare for sign illumination. This is not bothersome when halogen is used as a light source but when a light source that puts out three times more lumens is used the glare is intensified as well. Capping the capsule is novel and may make the customer and the installer feel better but the effects would be neglegible because most of the light being emitted from the capsule itself is directed towards the reflector, not toward where the cap is on the capsule. One must remember that when HID is installed in a halogen housing which is designed for a dual element bulb such as a 9007,the HID capsule may be illuminating the high beam portion of the reflector as well. There have been several designs to try to get around this problem-I've even seen HID capsules with mini solenoids in the base to pop the capsule into a different position which is supposed to simulate high and low beams. To the best of my knowledge none of the remedies work very well if at all. Halogen projectors using PNP kits have had more success but without bending the squirrel spotter plate they too can be quite glarey(is that even a word?) and are usually equipped with a fresnel type lens so the cutoff is often a bit fuzzy.

Yeah, I call BS on the capping thing cutting down glare as well. Not much light actually comes out the END of the capsule, so it's going to have very little effect.

Sonny, now you have me curious what you're working on....lol. We could take a look at the fogs and see what options there are. Or you could just talk me into whatever else you have going on. Curious to hear about the reverse ideas as well.

I'm sure Massa would be up for coming over again. We'd like to discuss some Ren. Fair stuff with you guys for our son, too, who suddenly has interest (his girlfriend has interest, therefore so does he....lol).

Default New project

I tried to re-size some of these pics but a few may be very large because I took them with Angela's new 10 mp camera.
Hella low beam projectors with used D2S bulbs, cheap shrouds and Hella replica ballasts:

More pics.
Unlit closeup-you can almost make out the fresnel lens:

Lit up with and without shroud:

Lit closeup-you can see the concentric circles in the lens. These are fresnel lenses which are meant to soften the cutoff somewhat:

And finally a cutoff/beam pattern pic:

These are what I am going to be making the boxes for,a sort of HID light pod for those who don't want to go full retro and cut up their headlights or just want to add more forward lighting.

It might work. I have two more projectors of similar in size en route. These I took pics of are going to be housed in one "pod" but we may be able to fit the others in a PVC pipe section each and put them in your stock fog locations. Hmm.....

How deep are those projectors?

I've yet to get under the bumper and take a look at how my fogs are mounted. I need to do that before I can really get too many ideas going in my head on retrofitting anything...lol. As we found out, space might be an issue....

Good point. The other projectors I got are almost identical to the ones pictured which means they are about 7.5 inches front to back when fully assembled, though truth be told they really aren't meant to be fogs! Take some measurements and we'll see what we can do. I don't think I'm going to really start anything up till after the new year-too much other stuff to do.

At this point money is tight anyway. I might just get a decent PnP kit to throw in the fogs. Cheapest, fastest solution. I can always upgrade from that later if money allows.

Will D2S bulbs fit in a D2R housing?
