Default STX/U Rule Take-back Allowance for Lips, Spoilers and Wings

I was wondering if some in ST, STX and STU would be interested in hearing about this?

An influential ST/STS Civic/Miata racer trying to eliminate the lip/wing allowance or substitution for all ST classes. We need some letters sent to the SEB to help counter this rule take-back.

Some of the STX/U WRX's and STi have run v-spec lips and other wings in the past, and thought you would like to have that option for the future.

A letter just stating that you "like rule 14.2F as is" would help. The SEB may not put much weight in form letters, but below is a letter template someone else wrote, that can be pasted into an email to the SEB.

If interested, email to seb@scca.com, and it will be routed to the STAC for consideration.

Thanks,

Rick

SEB/STAC,
I am writing in favor of leaving 14.2F as-is for the following reasons:

-No Rule take back: this rule is well established and many people have spent time and money to be fully legal in regards to this rule.
-No Rules creep: This rule has already been changed once to measure chord width instead of "as seen from above" for wings.
-The Rule is clear, measurable, and adequate: The 5 sq. feet has been established for wings and splitter lips, and is clearly to meet the intent statement to limit significant function at solo speeds.
-Good for participation: The "import" crowd like wings, and it draws them into the sport because they see similar cars to what they own.
-Right for ST cars: Many ST cars come stock with big wings (STi,Evo,...).
-ST's intent of common mods done on street cars:Tuner/import mags have wings on our type of cars.

Thank you,

I'll send one as well.

I'll vote for the takeback since they f'd this class up with the exhaust BS a couple years ago. This class has nothing to do with "common mods" anyway.

In the interests of full disclosure don't you sell a lot of these wings?

I sorta think we are past the "import tuner scene" thing at this point and it's just a class where cars with light mods and street tires go. I feel like I prefer the intent (no aerodynamic effect at solo speeds) to the allowance (CSP-style spoilers legal). I will be writing my letter this week.

If I may post an example of an awesome wing...

How can you ban this - it's gorgeous!

And, if I may use the new STR class as an example, the S2000 CR comes stock with a god-awful looking wing. Why shouldn't other cars in the class be allowed to put a similar monstrosity on. Fields of similar looking cookie-cutter cars are boring. The wing rule allows some individuality and expression.

I don't like the rule as-is, or the current takeback as suggested... All I ever wanted was to remove the damn thing because it's fugly, blocks the rear view, and makes the cops think I'm a teenager.

If you are going to write letters I would make it clear that you are talking about STX, STU, and STR. Not all street touring classes.

You sound like Hollis on the SCCA forums about me selling wings.

I sell more big wings to SM/XP class racers. Actually at nats this year, of the 50+ entries in STU/L, no one else was running my full STU wing set up, Geoff was running just a single element that is stock sized.

Full disclosure is a STAC member putting out a sample letter to take-back the lip/spoiler/wing rule, which he will be voting on.

I think ST cars are more in tune with the current trends, unlike SP, which is resistant to change. Even NASCAR fans are knowledgeable about wings and splitters.

The reason I wrote a letter is because spent time and $ to develop a wing, within the rules. I don't like it when someone assumes ALL the ST classes don't want the allowance because they don't want one on their Civic or Miata. Or that we will won't mind a rules take-back because it won't happen for a year, and we were ok with rule changes before.

I do think the rule could be cleaned up, but not eliminated, so that those running aftermarket, or dealer installed, lips or CF spoilers, wouldn't have to get rid of them.

I'm fine with the rule as is, with the only change being that no matter what the car came with, you can have either a wing, spoiler, or nothing...your choice. I've always hated that and want to get rid of my monstrosity without having to put on a "mini wing".
