Accessport as a diagnostics tool
Hi All,
Not sure if this was in the right section, but I couldn't find any archived info on this particular topic, and was hoping yall could help. Background: Roommate has a 2005-2007 (not sure of year) Chevy Cobalt non-SS. Her engine light came on and I was wondering if I could use my cobb accessport from my 2006 wrx to diagnose the problem. So I guess I need to know 2 things: 1) Is the port plug universal on the cobb and the chevy. 2) Can I use a married Cobb AP as a diagnostic tool on a car other than the wrx it is installed on? Thanks in advance.

The AccessPORT will only work on vehicles it is written for. Sometimes they can read trouble codes on other cars, but only if they use the same communication protocols. So if your Cobalt has a CAN BUS system and you have a non-CAN BUS AccessPORT, it won't work. Mostly, you can only read trouble codes on other WRXs etc.

and if its V2 it only works on THE subaru its married to (or is it just the models its made for? i.e. 2.5L turbo etc). If its a V1, it works on any obd2 subaru, even if its not married. One benefit to the older V1.

Well I just changed her spark plugs last night and the air filter and the car is running much smoother and the engine light has turned off. One thing I noticed, the mechanic she had sent it to last week to diagnose for $100 (but ultimately didn't do the job cause he wanted like $500) left the air box top completely open and not even aligned with the bottom part of the box. There was about an inch gap on the two halves so there was no pressure going thru there.
How much could this impact performance? I know that it sucks in warmer air from the engine, but does the loss of pressure thru the air box create a big drag on performance? Or does the box lid not being held on tightly prevent the air filter from creating a good seal and thus allow dirt into engine? |
