Question flashing CEL?

hey guys

i just put in an Apex ITC and as i was driving home my CEL started to flash at me?? it was a consistent blink....did i blow something?? i was driving it kindda hard....i am also running really really rich....i haven't had the time to lean out my RRFPR yet....i checked my spark plugs yesterdays and found out that my installer forget to pull out my stock ones....so basically i have been driving around about 400 miles with my sucky champions...they were super black....i hope this hasn't done any damage to the car....my idle is horrific and i bog a lot....my engine also died on the road yesterday too...i did retard about 3-4 degrees around the 4500-5600 and 5600 and up RPM range....i don't even know if my ITC is working with those horrible plugs....i picked up some brand new OEM plugs today just for now and save my colder NGK for later when my friends and i get together for a tuning session...i drove it around today and nothing out of the ordinary....just the usual bogging and hesitation when starting the ignition....anyone know what could've caused the flashing CEL?? thanx guys

I had that problem, and it was the only after I refilled on gas, so I concluded that ther was not enough pressure building in the gas tank after I started it. And it bogged real bad when starting from a light. I just turned the car on and off a couple times after a fillup. Check your gas cap and make sure it's screwed on tight. My .02cents.

flashing MIL=Stage 1 Misfire(means it's happening right then)

that's due to the ITC pulling timing...will always throw misfire codes w/ the ITC

thanx guys

i just pulled all my spark plugs and man they're shot....you know that white ceramic stuff around the tip of the plug?? a chunk of it cracked off on two of them and one plug had that whole section gone and another one had it partially incinerated...the car runs sooo much smoother after the install....my engine don't shake anymore....and when i downshift i don't get the poping sounds from the exhaust as much....i hope that white stuff isn't still somewhere cruising in my engine....i am still running rich so hopefully i can lean it out soon....i know that there is a device that can detect knocking or detination and display it on a monitor....where can i get one and whats the name?? thanx

The CEL is normal, as has been stated. Are you getting really crappy start ups? My car seems like it hates to start, sometimes, and it really is starting to piss me off. It will even stop in the middle of a crank and start back up again. I don't know whats wrong with it.

You are probably talking about the J&S Knock Sensor, which you can buy from, well I don't know the website, but lots of guys run them on RS-T's to prevent detonation. I have one and it works awesome (also running the ITC).

Did you put in the colder NGK's or the same stock plugs again?

the knock link is what will let ya know when you are knocking...but IMHO by the time it lights up it's already too late.

Jeebus you should have heard my car start this morning. Turned it over and it actually held so slow an RPM that I could hear each cylinder firing, and that was without the starter motor engaged. I let it sit to see if it would die and then it went right into cold idle as it normally would. I didn't even think an engine could sustain itself at such a low RPM.

Yah, well, its not that big of deal, just embarassing when I have a girl in the car and I have to answer the question "whats wrong with your car?" .........

Anyway, I don't what the problem is with the car, something with the ITC intercepting the signal and not giving a good ignition pulse or.....I don't know I'm just rambling.

yeah thats exactly what happens....i start the car and its like it's barely starting up.....i try reving my engine to see what happens and the throttle response is extremely slow....i have to wait about 20 to 30 seconds to have it start idleing....i got the OEM models....i figure...until i have the time to tune my car i might as well not run good NGK and have them burned out....my idle is still on the rough side and still running really rich....am i suppose to clean the O2 sensors too when i change my sparks.....its weird because the slow start up seems to happen after the ITC got putted in....i think its the bad signal from the ITC thats making it hesitate at start up.....forgive me for my ignorance but is knocking actually detination or something less serious....because i would rather have a sensitive electronic device to tell me when its knocking rather than by ear....when i tune down my Cartech RRFPR to lean it out i am suppose to listen for knocking and rich it back up....i think a knocking sensor can detect it better....this will also help me tune the ITC to retard at that certain RPM when knocking occurs.....thanx

hmmmmm i was kindda worried that it might be hurting engine...especially with those struggling startups....i guess i can live with it....i get some hesitation when i step on the throttle sometimes too...this hesitation happens from idle....like when i am at a stop light and the light turns green....it takes about 1.5 to 2 seconds to go....you guys know what might be causing?? i am still running really rich.....thanx

Throttle tip-in lag doesn't sound like an ignition problem. Sounds like a throttle pump issue.

Its absolutly normal. don't worry about the ITC guys. I just like it sometimes when I can turn the key to start up the car and then turn it right back to the on thing. the car will now crank itself soemtimes sometimes giving me a delay before actually doing it. i think its kinda funny but I don't see how it would be hurting hte car.

oh one more thing i've discovered today.....as you all might know i am running super rich and never really had time to lean my RRFPR out....i started the car and wanted to see how much black smoke was coming out of my tailpipe so i floored it.....i've noticed that my rpm won't go over 4600rpm....it was like i have a rev limiter set to 4600rpm...weird eh?? i set the ITC's 4500rpm range back to zero( i had it at 3 degrees retard) and it went to 5200rpm maybe....i figure that because i am running so rich that retarding the timing... the fuel in the cylinders won't even have a chance to ignite....am i a little right or am i completely off???still learning here....thanx guys
