I was wondering is this the resonator? its not the cat i know that for sure its closer to the tail pipe the cat is up more towards the front. If i removed this i should get a louder sound right? Because i'm almost positive that its a resonator or something, i'm working on getting a good sound out of my 08 2.5i hatch, and i wanted to know if i removed that resonator and put a piece of pipe in its place would there be any difference?

There are a number of cats along the exhaust system.
I not sure what model or year car you have but it is probably similar to this: ![]() |

His car is NA but the diagram shows that indeed, it's the muffler. You could unbolt it and see how it sounds. Or ask your neighbors down the street how it sounds as they'll hear it from 1/2 a mile away.

i know what the muffler is i got it taken off at a muffler shop and i have it in my garage, this piece is the piece back from the muffler, that looks as though its the resonator, if i cut that out and put a straight pipe in its place will that make it a lot louder?

what is your vehicle exactly?
probably is the resonator, if you have an NA it will be quite loud without it. the NAs don't usually sound good with no muffler, no resonator is probably worse. '07 2.5i Last edited by au82; 09-24-2009 at 07:20 PM. |

Resonator. The cats are further up the exhaust.

If its just slightly bigger than the rest of the tubing its the resonator. Yes it helps to quit down your exhaust.

so if i cut that resonator out and put a straight pipe in its place, would it hurt my car? like it wouldn't trigger a CEL or something completely stupid would it?

wouldn't do anything to it at all, or it wouldn't on a wrx at least.
Whats your purpose of doing this? Do you want your car to sound more aggressive? If so this probably isn't the way to do it. It will most likely make it a bit louder, and raspier. If you want an aggressive sounding suby, then just get a catback |

Dont know what you mean by cherry bomb, but a cheap catback isn't that much more than taking it in to get the resonator chopped off

ricer or nicer? lol. if you want to get more sound you're going to have to get rid of the 1.25" factory pipes and huge mufflers FYI. go to an exhaust shop and have them hack off from the res back and just do straight pipes w/ some tips or something

Cherry Bomb is a type of nasty raspy "muffler" muscle cars guys used to use. You'll find it popular with the domestic mullet-militia.

are you sure you want to do that? i don't know how strict the exhaust laws are in your location but wouldn't you want to keep a perfect OEM exhaust in your garage just in case?
