Clean title? Am I missing something here? Did it get paid out by insurance, or is it going to be a major loss for the seller?

It'll buff out, and with some over night parts from Japan, she'll be ready in time for racewars.

This is not uncommon at all, this why I tell people you cant trust a car fax. Though I dont know who in there right mind would pay $2.5k for that car, its worth $500 at most.

Ok I understand the theory behind it with, say, an 85 F-150 that's worth $1000 in good shape or bad, and it's super easy to repair, but the cheapest I've seen an RS is about ~5k plus there looks to be a couple of upgrades to that one. Gotta have a lot of cash into it. Why wouldn't you just file the insurance claim?

Unless, of course, it's uninsured.

^That's what I was thinking. I would assume by the damage that he hit a car though, so unless he paid for everything out of pocket he would have to file a claim.

Because your insurance rates go up, and you can make more money parting it out than what insurance will give you. A clean titled shell is also worth a decent amount since people want to build rally cars. My buddy sold his for $2,500, which is insane, they typically go for $600-1500 depending on the damage.

^the problem is the shell listed on that cl listing is probably not straight. $2.5 for that shell is ridiculously high

Assuming an insurance total, I can't see that an RS in good shape would net less than ~$5k, especially if it's got a lot of upgrades (that are also insured).

At first I thought, ok, he bought it back for $2000, and is trying to turn a quick profit by selling the whole thing for $2500.

But really? Who would bother buying THAT as a shell to build a rally car? There are several other Impreza coupes on CL right now for about the same price, and none of them have such major structural and cosmetic damage. Plus the other ones have decent parts for a part-out to recoup the cost of the build.

Maybe Peter would have a better idea of what something like that would be worth as a basis for a rebuild, but it just seems like more work than the possible payout.

As far as an insurance total, if insurance totalled that car, it wouldnt have a clean title. The car in this ad is worth $500 at most IMO.

In my previous post I meant any impreza. The $2500 I was takling about was an 05 with light front end damage, still dont know how he got that much for it, but it was worth it to someone. There was an 04 that was in pretty bad shape, but still worth $800 on CL not to long ago. Ive seen RS, L, WRX shells go for anywhere from $600-$1500 as long as they have clean titles. And by shell, im talking bare shell, like rolling on a set of dollys ready to be dipped and seam welded bare.

Side note: Mustang convertible sheet metal/chassis is worth about $25 at a recycle yard.
