Default Study shows that Hummer owners choose it because of its high emissions

Quote:
The high emissions and fuel consumption of Hummers is a main reason why people buy them, according to research from the US.

The Journal of Consumer Research asked a small selection of 20 Hummer owners why they purchased the large SUV and it was found most buyers were attracted to the macho US image the car portrays.

“As we studied American Hummer owners and their ideological beliefs, we found that they consider Hummer driving a highly moral consumption choice,” said the report.
“For Hummer owners it is possible to claim the moral high ground. The moralistic critique of their consumption choices readily inspired Hummer owners to adopt the role of the moral protagonist who defends American national ideals.”

The report claims that the negative stigma attached to Hummer ownership was appealing to buyers who wanted to defend the right of Americans to buy whichever car they wanted, regardless of emissions and image.

I don't think "macho image" and "choice" exactly equates to "high emissions". Yes, they may like the fact that they can choose to drive a low mpg vehicle. That doesn't mean they want all of the cats removed to increase emissions.

No, it is official that they want to drive whatever vehicle they choose to. They went into it knowing it was going to be a gas hog. And they do not care. For them, the HUMMER is what they WANT to drive. I totally support them and their right to spend their money on what they want. If it pisses off a prius owner or three, all that much better.

That would be fine if they were paying the full cost of their choice, but the many externalized costs of their increased consumption are shared by everyone. That too is a classic (if distasteful) part of the 'American way' - individuals get the benefits of their choices, while society picks up the costs...

A research group of 20 people... Wow.

I for one, did not buy a Hummer for it's poor fuel economy. I bought it for off road capabilities. BTW, it gets good mpg for an 8000lb truck with low gearing and full time 4WD.

Like it is the only 6.2 liter out there. 20 Combined (most say) gov. say 18. Heck that's what a STI gets.

All of this talk and no one thought it was funny that only 20 owners were asked questions? This study is absolutely useless and proves nothing. Think about it, if this guy was driving down the street and ran into a Subaru gathering he would conclude that Subaru buyers are all under the age of 30 and mostly fix up their cars to street race. He would also conclude that Subaru sells about 90% WRXs and STis.

Anyway, all I am saying is that the sample is too low for any kind of conclusions.

+1 That seems like a really small number of owners to me as well. Maybe they just polled the Hummer owners in the parking lot of the Texas State Fair!!

Definitely an anti-Hummer bias. Although the sales figures differ, the MPG of a H2 or H1 and a MB G500 are virtually identical. But when was the last time anyone criticised that behemoth?

I don't get it. High emissions = cancer(s). Cancer = death. Can Hummer owners not die?

Statistical methods pwn joo...

With a population of 20,000, a sample size of 20 gives a confidence interval of about 20%. So "Most Hummer Owners plus or minus 20%..." Sloppy research to be sure, but still accurate enough to be a rough guide.

I used the confidence interval calculator here: http://www.surveysystem.com/sscalc.htm
