Default Feds Seize Illegal Nissan Skyline GT-Rs In Cali.

Quote:
After warning letters were sent to owners 60 days ago (below), teams of Kevlar-armed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers are seizing grey market Nissan Skyline GT-Rs imported by Kaizo according to GTR USA Blog. Below, why it happened.

Last August the letter below was sent from the Southern California United States Attorney's office stating that "the referenced Nissan Skyline automobile... is not in compliance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Transportation requirements." The letter goes on to state that the vehicles can't be operated and the feds are coming for them within 60 days. They weren't lying.

According to GTR USA, two R34s and an R32 have already been seized and, if the letter above is an indication, an R33 is on the list.

Importing vehicles without the appropriate credentialing from the appropriate U.S. agencies almost always ends up with cars being seized by the government, especially Skylines, and people getting fined or jail time. In this case, the cars were imported by Kaizo under a special exemption for automotive parts. They brought over the shells and drivetrains separately and then reassembled them. They were then, apparently, registered under the law as SB 100, which is for kit/show cars. This exemption allows vehicles not driven frequently to be registered without smog checks.
We have a feeling these cars are being driven frequently.
The U.S. Attorney ended his letter "Very Truly Yours" but it looks like those Nissans are now "Very Truly His."

So the vehicles were legally imported through a loophole in the US law and because the Gov't feels they are being driven more often than they should be they are going to seize them? Hm, sounds a little shakey to me.

If it is registered as a kit car I do not see why this would happen. There has to be something else going on here that we are not aware of.

Sucks for the people that own them. I'm sure thy put a lot of money into buying and maintaining them. Especially for the ones that do only use them as show cars. Just to be taken away and crushed.

It beats actually fighting crime. Nonsense like this gets recorded as action taken by the police industry; 'at-a-boys are dispensed by superiors. Bloated budgets are justified.

I am so glad we have the feds to protect us from Skylines.

Take your greymarket import and hide it....hide it really really good. Darth Vader is coming and needs to choke the crap out of someone....no real good reason but he's gonna choke someone.

this article absolutely enrages me. I am so sick and tired of the government allocating my tax dollers towards wastes of time like this, all because some nitwit in a suit has his pantys in a bunch over a couple marks on a list.

there is absoultely no reason for these cars to be seized or crushed. A simple nonrenwal of vehicle registration would have done the trick if you really want them off the road. Afterall they really do kill thousands of children per year. What happened to the show and display law that's in effect? I believe the skylines are covered under it. More over what's wrong with keeping the car as a track vehicle. It's one thing if the vehicle does not have a valid registraion. But they all do. I want my tax dollers back and I want a rework of our freaking nose budding goverment. Next time I vote, I'm putting in you're all fired.

Motorex R-33's are legal as they went through the DOT certification process (crashing, modified, etc....)

All the sprinter vans were imported that way from Canada too. Though, those did meet standards.

First reaction is wow this is really stupid, but all of the owners and the importer knew that the cars would not be legal. I don't feel too bad. As for keeping the car to track, you wouldn't have to register or insure it so it doesnt matter. They likely wouldn't have a way to track it to you, and I'm sure you could have talked to someone to explain if that were the situation.

A lot of agencies are low on work. This is just catching up on the pile of papers to be processed.

If they just did a non renewal on the registration to get them off the road doesnt quite send the same messege as taking them away completely. I'm sure most of them would still have be driven on the road anyway.

Yes there is something else going on here... Jalopnik fails to mention that the SB100 law is not a federal law, it is only for a smog exemption in the state of CA, and it only is supposed to apply to registering cars that come from a manufacturer in component form or to cars that were built from scratch at home. How much the car gets driven or whether they are show cars or not has nothing to do with it.
So while these guys may have exploited a loophole for registering the car in CA, they did not get federal permission to have the cars on the road in the US.
Sure they could have been brought in as track only or as show cars (which iirc only allows them to be in the country for one year, with very limited use), but they didn't, they knowingly broke the law, they got caught and now they have to pay the consequences.

If the govt ignored it, then it would have set a precedent for others to break the law too, so I fail to see why people are upset about this

I thought a bunch of the MOtorex Skylines got impounded in the last year or so as well? I could be wrong tho.

Here's a fun guide to importing Skylines that's up on eBay (Its too long to cope/paste):

I remember a couple of years back, after 09/11, the government floated a bill that would allow the government to seize privately owned military aircraft. Just imagine having a P51 valued at some insane price taken away from you because it was once a military aircraft. The big differentiator was money. People that own those aircraft are very wealthy and probably influential. The bill never made it anywhere really. I do feel a bit bad for these guys. Did they do something wrong? I don't really know based on what I've read, but the car shouldn't be confiscated. It should be inspected and the owner told whether it can be renewed as a road vehicle or not.

wow this isnt shocking but is definantly big news. Its ALL how you title your greymarketed skyline.

I personally know someone in PA with a R34 V-Spec II that was imported a few years ago. He brought the car over as a "race car" and the car was immediately taken from the ports (still in shipping container and customs checked it in) down to a track (that will remain unnamed) where he had a storage spot for the car on the track. This way the car would NEVER need to see the road, and wouldnt be registered. This was all documented (as he is a lawyer) so he could cover his ass.

A few weeks later after sitting in storage at the track the car made its way home, it got a little makeover that included a new vin number and some other goodies and is now legally registered as a 240sx, and insured as a "modified car" worth roughly $200k.

So if anyone happens to see this bayside blue 1999 Nissan GT-R V-Spec II built by top secret right outside of Philly let him know you know Gary with the STi, I know him very good. And dont have any plans of keeping up with the car, it roughly puts down 983awhp on pump gas and i wanna say around 1200ish on race.

Sure he lost that title that said "Nissan Skyline" but he doesnt have to worry about anyone coming for his baby anytime in the future. He also has a R35 that the car sits next to in the garage. And on the other side a nice F430 keeps it company. And that 240 with a nissan skyline title is still unregistered sitting in a Uhaul storage about 15 minutes away from the "race track" it was stored at.
