Question Cop Patrol/Radaring Question?

Hey wassup everyone? I just had a quick question about what cops can and can't do, because i heard something before and thought it was true... but tonite i'm having doubts after what happened.

Well simply the story is this.. i was on my way home from studying for finals at Rutgers coming down 18 South into East Brunswick at about 1:45am.. its dark and foggy out.. and next thing i know my radar dectector goes off at 3 outta 5 bars... i look around and don't see any cop, i wasn't speeding or anything so i wasn't worried.. then the radar stops, but i'm still looking around, because at nite on 18 there are always cops around.. next thing i know the cop guns me and the radar goes off full 5 outta 5 bars and i look over and see a cop parked in the parking lot on my right.. i barely see him because the lot wasn't lite or anything.. and this is where my question comes from.. the cop was gunning people in the dark, his cruiser did not have any lights on at all, and from what believed and heard before was that if a cop is on duty and radaring speeders, he had to at least have his parking lights on in the dark.. and wasn't allowed to sit there in complete darkness... so i was just wondering if anyone knows the real deal for this situation.. or if anyone else has heard that cops need to have their lights on.. or if i'm just a retard??? no need to answer that last part.. hahaha!

I'm pretty sure they don't need to have any lights on. To be sure, we should both take a retard test.

I believe this varies from state to state and I think that NJ is different from NY but not sure which is which..

It varies from state to state. I believe that in NJ and NY they don't need to have any lights on at all. PA requires parking lights IIRC.

I dont know if they should have their lights on....but I think they SHOULD.

For those in NY, there is HOV lane on the LIE and on some section of the HOV there is a shoulder to the left.

Sometimes I see a cop just sitting in the dark in the left shoulder at late night. I am not saying with our headlights on we wont see him there, but if it just happens that the patrol car is dark blue or one of those unmarked black cars, I think it is very dangerous...What if someone in the HOV lane needs to pull over the road fast due to a flat/blow out and when he pulls into the shoulder, he smacks right into the squad car???

I dunno if it will ever happen like but they should have the lights on

I used to be on my local First Aid Squad and we were very friendly with our local police department. They used to let us fire the radar gun on cars from the parking lot of the building. Pretty funny watching people slam on the brakes every time we flipped the radar on.

In any case, they used to never have their lights on when we did this. I've come up on lots of local police as well as state troopers at night and they almost never have their lights on so I don't think that it's a requirement in NJ. Hope that helps.

Neeraj, what parking lot was he in? I know most of the EBPD hideouts on Rt. 18 since I've been stopped so often...

I believe in NY the law is that the police vehicle can not be camoflaged or completely hidden (i.e. must be in "plain view"). That does not mean they can't park on one side of a bush (so long as they are visible from the opposite side), it just means they can't bury their vehicle in brush or otherwise be completely out of sight. Thanks to some law dealing with the theory "Never a cop around when you need one". However, this law doesn't cover lighting, so at night they can have no lights on.

They don't need to have any lights on. Just ride up and down the GSP at night, and you'll see them running radar behind the underpasses with no lights on.

Oh yeah, like Jim asked, what parking lot was this? If I had to guess, I would say the old Meyers. That's where I always see them.

EBPD hiding spots on Rt. 18:

-----South bound
Meyer's parking lot

Parking lot for Dunkin Donuts (go figure) by Tices Lane traffic light

Parking lot by Psychic (not sure what intersection, it's the light before the edgeboro rd. OBT jughandle.

Bike shop parking lot by Brunswick Square Mall

-----North bound

Magnifico's parking lot (big time!!! NEVER speed past that place at night!)

Sunoco parking lot between Rues Lane light and Denny's

Boston Market parking lot in Mid State Mall

I have a lot of respect for police in general, but after two verbal confrontations with the EBPD, their traffic officers get the monkey

pretty sure there has to be some sort of light on....

the dome light in the cabin counts as does the little red led on the radar gun....either way...you lose.

Seeing how what you describe is what I do for a living, I'll let you in on a secret...

darkness is my friend when I run radar.

By the way I don't believe in speeding tickets unless the driver is acting like an a hole and putting others in harms way.

I do believe highly in ticketing folks who drive in the fast lane. The law in NJ in case you didn't know is pass left keep right.

just thought i might add that little commentary

Treekilla thinks that if there was a thumbs up smiley, you would get it. Treekilla is glad to see there are some police officers that share his views on the speeding thing. As for everything else, tree killa thinks you guys are heroes, and you got treekilla respect.

I don't know if he really exists, but I agree with this TreeKilla. I like cops who aren't d!cks and who do their job correctly and with justice. Thank you for being a reasonable officer.

Hey MorrisCountyWRX, its nice to see some officers on this board and thanks for the input, its cool to know there are officers out there that are all pricks! I always seem to get the officers that have a stick up their a$$ .. and i don't even speed much.. i just have gotten screwed by cops, i've gotten a 75 in a 65 ticket totally bogus, and i've also been ticketed for stupid stuff like failure to signal a lane change when nobody was on the road! hey how about a PBA Card hook-up for a fellow WRX driver?

I work in East Orange and I do not use radar. But when I do stop someone if they are acting stupid they get a coupon. However I talk to them and from that give them a chance. We have problems of people who go through trafic lights. I see to many accidents at lights and that is my pet peeve. So be carefull out there guys and girls.

IMHO ticketing for reckless driving (e.g.) at lights serves public safety more than ticketing for 15mph over the limit. Kudos to felix.

Treekilla says: amen man.

Treekilla almost got killed the other day by some crazy bitch that decided to run a red light. Treekilla got a funny feeling and paused, and right in front of him came the bitch.

Now that treekilla thinks of it, he would have been fine, but the biotch that gets t-boned by the Pajero would not have been.

Well, I got pulled over by someone who didn't have their lights on and sitting in the middle of the highway. I don't think that they need them on in PA, if they did i would have been able to fight the ticket.

Personally, I like the fact that Treekilla talks about himself in the third person, like Moses Malone did.

Well, Neeraj I brought this little topic up at a study group session for finals. I'm in a C.J. Masters program... so over 80% of my classmates are cops. They started laughing hysterically... so I guess they DO NOT have to keep their parking lights on when using radar. Funny, they never really answered my question...
