2010 model year upgrades for Nissan's GT-R will include the adoption of the Spec-V's rear diffuser plus new side NACA ducts, suspension tweaks, and an optional NISMO data-logging facility that will let drivers share and compare data via their PCs. The changes were revealed to PistonHeads yesterday by GT-R project chief Kazutoshi Mizuno, who was our host yesterday at the company's Nurburgring technical centre where elements of the 2010 upgrade package - and European Spec-V models - are undergoing their final evaluation.

According to Mizuno-san, the suspension tweaks are minor but include marginally stiffer front spring and damper rates, and stiffer bushing for the rear torsion control arms. The aim is to further increase the driver appeal - or to paraphrase the enigmatic chief engineer 'to make the driver's buttocks feel even closer to the rear wheels during sporty driving'.




Final 2010 MY testing is underway

The NISMO data-logging system will be part of an upgraded sat-nav option. As we understand it, owners will be able to download data using a USB memory stick, load it onto their PC for analysis, and even share their numbers with other GT-R drivers online. The adoption of the Spec-V rear diffuser and new NACA ducts next to the rear wheels are there to improve airflow and brake cooling, says Mizuno. The 2010 cars have also been tweaked to meet Euro 5 emissions regs, and an ECU modification improves low-speed tractability in low temperatures when the transmission fluid is still cold.

Mizuno and Nissan senior vice president Andy Palmer (who was co-incidentally visiting the Nurburgring GT-R test team on the same day) also gave us some insights into the new Spec-M model that has been rumoured for some time.

Contrary to the suggestion in our story yesterday, it won't be at the Tokyo motor show next month, but will emerge sometime next year instead. We shouldn't get too distracted by the 'comfort' tag, they say, as the core package will be largely undiluted. Instead, think of a GT-R 'plus' with extra luxury fittings like a high-end sound system, expensive interior fittings and a more 'bespoke' feel.

Like the Spec-V, the idea of the Spec-M is to increase exclusivity, not improve accessibility, so although the suspension may be set up for a little more comfort we're not expecting the driving experience to feel very different from the standard car.

Meanwhile the 2010 model year GT-R should be available in the UK early next year, around the same time as the Spec-V edition.

Since Nissan launched the original 2009 R35 GT-R back in late 2007, the car has been subjected to a program of continuous improvement that culminated with the launch of the ‘Series II’ model earlier this year. Nissan shows no sign of slowing down, however, as latest comments from the car’s project chief, Kazutoshi Mizuno, reveal even more modifications for the 2011 model year.

For 2010 we saw Nissan launch the hardcore SpecV model (in Japan only), as well as a small bump in power, new suspension, revised wheel finishes and a new Transmission Control Module (TCM) program for the car’s six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

For the 2011 model year, Nissan will reportedly add a brand new SpecM model to the GT-R family, as well as stiffer suspension, new side intakes for the rear wheels, and a Nismo data-logging system. The data-logger will come with the satnav system and will allow drivers to share and compare data via their PCs.

The suspension tweaks will include slightly stiffer front spring and damper rates, as well as stiffer bushings for the rear torsion control arms. The 2011 model will also adopt the SpecV’s rear diffuser to further enhance high-speed driving performance.

The new 2011 Nissan GT-R should first go on sale in the first half of next year

^^ Indeed.. I think this spec M would definitely be the answer to those who thought the current interior was a bit chintzy...Perhaps an even better 911 Turbo rival than the current model, not just in performance, but in how well the car is appointed?

I guess the use of 'memory stick? means a Sony stereo nav....GREAT! because the BOSE BLOWS big time. This bose system is so inferior to JBL and Alpine that I have had in other cars.

daytime running lights
lane change signal delay
Better seat material..all leather would be nice
better headliner material..that cloth covered card board is not for $80k car
real carpet (its just like that Suby plastic felt)
Paddle shifters should be attached to wheel and move with it.
and yes, even the 370z has more luxury features like remote power down windows etc???

Hopefully the SpecM package will silence some of the critics who expected more out of the GT-R's interior in terms of amenities. But more importantly, I hope that the SpecM isn't priced too distant from the standard GT-R's price range, otherwise it'll give the Vette fans more of a reason to keep comparing it to the ZR1.

Not that it's a huge debate since 'Ring times haven't been discussed for at least the past several months, but after seeing the brief mention of the SpecV model, I wonder what its 'Ring time is... I recall the engineers saying that it could beat the ZR1's time or something like that.

Also, while everyone thought that the SpecV was going to be some 500+ hp beast but ended up having identical power to the standard GT-R, Nissan had been hinting at another GT-R slotted above it... any word on that model?

The development and launch of the current R35 Nissan GT-R was an epic achievement for the Japanese automaker. After all, Nissan was able design and engineer a sports car capable of outperforming exotic supercars with pricetags twice as high, as well as make it seat four adults in relative comfort and be easy to drive everyday.
A series of planned updates of the car should allow the GT-R to remain supreme for some time to come, and this will reportedly include the introduction of a brand new model around 2013.
At a special event at Nissan’s Nurburgring Technical Centre last week, Nissan’s vice president of global product planning, Andy Palmer, reaffirmed Nissan’s commitment to the GT-R project.
Palmer also confirmed that a model replacement program for the GT-R was still in place despite the economic downturn. He explained that Nissan is planning to mimic the timescale used by Porsche for its 911 GT-2, which means a model life cycle of around five to six years.
Palmer said the R36 GT-R would be more of an evolution of the current model’s platform rather than a completely new car like the R35. This means that a twin-turbocharged V-6 powertrain will remain, as will the current rear transaxle configuration.
This fits with Nissan’s plan to continuously improve on the GT-R to ensure the car remains competitive.
