Buy his Triumph TT.

You'll be in prime bike buying season in a few weeks.

With the exception of my latest purchase, I have bought all my bikes in late fall/winter. No need to find a "project."

Yes, it would also help if you specified a price range... CraigsList is your friend.

Best suggestion I've seen yet.

Not that I'm biased.

Just sold my SV -- GREAT bike and I miss it. Great sound (don't sound like every other sportbike out there with an I4! V-TWIN! V-TWIN!), good torque (which is better for commuting anyway), and comes in two versions... Ducati Monster-esque naked, or half-faired "S" version...

03+ are FI, if that's what you're looking for. Easy to work on, and have BIG aftermarket support (a lot of them become racebikes...)

Could you post at least a price range?

And why you want a 600? (ETA: Actually, I'm not sure if the Ninja 500 or the GS500f are FI, which was were I was headed w/ that question).

Also... looks like you're leaning towards the "sport" bike side of things, right?

My old Ninja 500 and my friends GS500f were both carbed but that may have changed in later years...

I think this is still the case.

...a cruiser is a street bike.

...a dual sport is a street bike.

...a UJM is a street bike.

I'll just assume in this context that you just mean to say "sport bike". Forward leaning, fully faired, race-rep-esque.

You should have in mind what kind of bike, and then what bike you're looking for. Bikes have less room for adjustability, and more often than not, what someone finds comfortable is a torture rack for the next person.

Is this your first bike? I personally wouldn't recommend a modern 600 super sport for a beginner, but for those you're looking at GSXR 600, Ninja 600, or CBR 600.

Other more beginner friendly purchases in that CC range would be the SV 650 (though this is very torquey), Gladius (same thing as the SV), or the Ninja 650.

Older sport bikes you'll see are Katanas (heavy), as well as old versions of the aforementioned..

You could always buy a cheap Ninja 500 or Suzuki 500f and ride that around for a season until you get a different bike. Of course, you said you were looking for a 600cc, and obviously these would be too slow for you. If you're looking for straight acceleration, go ahead and buy yourself a 'busa. If you actually wanna learn to ride, get the smaller bike and learn some skills. I watched a proficient rider pull away from me in the twisties on her SV650. I was on a CBR600rr. I could catch up on straights no problem, but I got spanked in the curves. She could just outride me in every way. And her bike was putting much less power to the ground... It's the skill of the rider, not the specs of the bike.

Also, what's your predilection for EFI? Granted, fuel-injected bikes are easier to live with. My first bike was carbed, my third bike (technically my g/f's bike) is also carbed. My second bike was FI, as is my current ride.

Does $4,500 cover basic costs like tires, chain & sprockets? You should be able to find a bike that won't need these things for $4,500, but being end of the riding season, I wouldn't be surprised if someone said, "Eh, I'll just sell this thing." instead of storing it and buying the basic maintenance needs for it.

FWIW, I sold my '03 SV a few weeks ago for just a bit over $3k. The deals are out there, and as I said, now is the prime time to buy. Be patient and keep looking.

Triumphs are beautiful bikes!

I was looking at a Speed Triple before I settled on the VFR. However, I like fairings and am used to a more "sporty" position rather than the standard position.

The Daytona 675 is a dead sexy bike. I'd buy that over any of the late-model 600's by the Big Four (Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki). One of the best looking middle-weights, IMO.
