Default "Toyobaru / Subayota" FT-86 (merged 3 threads)

Toyota and Subaru's new toy

that's awesome...but sad to say that the boxer rumble might be available on a toyota.

It has been always a go. There was a rumour about dropping it, but that was squashed quickly.

You guys need to read the News & Rumours forum more often, there is a lively discussion there about this car that's been going on since the first mention of the car.

I hope not. After having the N/A 2.5rs GC chassis when everyone else in the rest of the world had turboed options of that car... I hope they throw a nice engine in there.

It is funny how the AE 86 is now such a great car ... Possibly the best car ever built.

But when it came out the car press hated it, old technology, poor set-up, under powered etc., Honda and Datsun had much better cars for the price.

Then come along some broke Japanese kids that are looking for a cheap rear wheel drive car to drift with (cause they figured out you can not do it in a Honda) and the AE86 becomes a legend.

It will be a 2.0L NA Boxer everywhere in the world. Direct injection? Maybe. HP? 150-200 depending on DI or not.

Don't count on that happening. The idea is to keep weight and cost down.

200 HP N/A Subaru variant direct injection with some sort of Toyota technology for variable timing
2800 lb
RWD
$20K

That's what I've gathered, but who knows at this point.

This should be a very minimalistic, down to earth, affordable, fun car to drive.

I also predict that if this goes thru to production in 2011, that there will be an explosion of aftermarket development for the platform.

Wack interior. Love how the DVD slot is behind a zipper. The stoners are going to love this vehicle.

Why oh why couldn't they make it AWD? Something lighter and smaller than the current Impreza would be grrrrreat...

The interior is concept car par for the course....it'll never see production.

Why couldn't they make it AWD? Because they're not trying to! The point is to be light, cheap, balanced....not nose heavy and expensive. This is the spiritual successor to the AE86, not the GC8 Type-R.

Bingo!

I'm ecstatic about this car. Finally someone understands that lightweight, decent power, RWD, and affordable sells.

How about add "not girly"? Miatas are fun cars that handle great, but I don't know about being seen cruising Robson in one

I can't believe you guys drive a Subaru.

Light and cheap RWD cars have been around since forever. A light and fast AWD car, on the other hand, is something a lot less common. Adding a pair of axles in front and a diff or two wouldn't kill the weight factor, especially with the boxer layout which is already well suited for AWD. They should have made it AWD.

Name 1 out right now besides the Miata, which is too girly and a ragtop.

And it's not only about "adding 2 axles and a diff", it's also about balance. They would have to move the boxer engine farther forward to accommodate the AWD, which would be detrimental to the weight balance. Think boxer engine BEHIND the front axle for a front-midship design.

Ummm...you're comparing 10+ year old cars to a brand new one? Might as well throw in the AE86 then.
