Default Rumor Of The Day: Delorean Plus Solstice Equals…?

Quote:
The new Delorean Motor Company is apparently exploring the possibility of buying GM’s Wilmington Kappa plant and building a Pontiac Solstice GXP-based sportscar there. The firm released the rendering above, and the following post via Facebook:
What if John DeLorean were still alive? Some of his greatest automotive accomplishments were at Pontiac, and now the Solstice is a new car without a brand, and DeLorean is brand without a new car…
JZD always said that the best memories of his automotive career were at Pontiac, and that connection between JZD and Pontiac is probably one of the better known associations among car enthusiasts
DeLorean VP James Espey tells Jalopnik. Which is apparently all the motivation it takes to launch a new sportscar based on a proven dud, and built at an ancient factory. Given that this is being spun as the ghost of JZD’s attempt to resuscitate Pontiac from beyond the grave, I think it’s fair to draw a few conclusions about where Mr DeLorean is spending the afterlife

On one hand I'm for it, but on the other hand I'm really against it. The Solstice and especially Sky were nice cars, and a very good "first try" at making a competitor for the Miata/S2000. It's almost a pity they had had to go before their time... but at the same time, the reason they were a good "first try" and not good cars is that they were fundamentally flawed. Ergonomics and especially the trunk space were effective disasters when compared to the competition. Those reasons alone kept the Kappas from actually truly matching the competition.

The best possible hopes for the Kappas were that if A) if GM hadn't gone bankrupt or B) GM went into bankruptcy but the Kappa platform survived the process. Then what we might have seen was a second-gen Kappa that actually got everything right.

I suppose the possibility exists that if DMC were to take over the Kappa platform that they might eventually be able to fix the issues the GM cars had, but DMC seems far from having the capital or financial solvency to get that done. I imagine they are just looking to buy the existing plant that scheduled for closing anyway and continue to churn out Kappas for their own label. But in at least the short-to-medium term, I don't see them having the engineering or funding to actually go anywhere beyond the niche with it.

I don't know.. I could almost forgive the horrible ergonomics and trunk space to be able to clean the car with some steel wool.

I know.. it doesn't mention stainless steel bodywork anywhere.. and modern bumpers would make it an entirely impractical idea for a sportscar.. but still..

I forget which came first- chicken or the egg.

Isn't the Sky/Solstice based on an Opel design? Sounds like a tough business deal to make work. Especially with no dealer network.

I could be mistaken but I'm pretty sure DMC also began restoring / making slight upgrades to older Deloreans still out there. Also I think they have all of the original remaining parts that were left over from the original production runs to do this and were even possibly producing some newer parts to build a "new" Delorean if someone wanted one...

The coupe did make it into production. There are still a few new ones on lots around the country, and used are available as well. (Not mine btw, I took a picture off autotrader)

No, they are not. Solstice/Sky came first, although Opel later had a version of the Sky. Prior to that, Opel/Vauhall had the Speedster which was based on the Lotus Elise...

I think they would have to consult Doc and Marty McFly first.

Actually, the timeline as I remember was US desined Solstice. Then chassis specs were sent to GM design houses around the world to increase volume and in turn decrease per-unit cost. Opel penned the GT body and showed it at one of the major euro autoshows. It was so well received that the design was adopted for the Saturn Sky.

Also, the DMC that is refinishing old Deloreans is not affiliated with the original DMC. They just bought the warehouse and parts left from the end of Delorean production. And they will do any amount of resto/modding that a client requests, right down to frame up with new parts. They just can't build a new car outright since it would have to meet modern crash and emissions standards.

Well, my whole point was that the Solstice was the original and not based on an opel, and the other variants came later. If you want to get technical, the Sky body was based off an Opel concept car, with an actual production Opel coming after and being essentially a rebadged Sky...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_Kappa_platform

Id still take the Elise-based Speedster over all of them,
