Back around Top Scoob 004 we made the horrendous mistake of excluding the so-called 'Saabarus' from competition. In an attempt to make it up to our boxer-motoring brothers in arms Top Scoob, sorry, Top Saabaru is very happy to announce our first Special Stage.
While the battle for honors in the Outback round rages on we're going to hold a round for Saabarus only. Having seen some of the entrants already I can say you're in for a treat as the Saab folks are doing it right. So without further delay, Top Scoob-Saab is proud to present the Put Put Saabaru Special Stage, Top Scoob-Saab-Whatever 017 !! ![]() *someone needs to put an EJ in a Sonnet, seriously someone get going on that. What's the story?
As a former 2002 Subaru Outback Sport owner, slipping into the seat of a Saab 92x was like "home". The controls were familiar, the dash was familiar... heck, everything was familiar. Except that the extra pedal and the shifter was different. My 92x was the vehicle I learned to drive standard on, and I bought it earlier this year (May 2009). The previous owner had modded it to Stage 2 (intake, exhaust, OTS map from Cobb). Those were the only mods. I had known for sometime that the next vehicle for me would be a WRX wagon - I need the capacity to lug around music gear, as I teach lessons and gig on the weekends. However, I wanted a little bit of ... interior "refinement." The premium WRX wagons with leather still commanded a premium price, and to be honest, I wasn't completely sold on the look of the hood scoop. Enter the Saab 92x. A Impreza wagon in nearly every way, and available with similar trim to a WRX premium. I loved the front end, the hoodscoop that wasn't as prominent, and the two-tone leather interiors. I also loved the potential the car had with the Impreza platform and engine. Eventually I focused my attention on finding a Saab 92x and the deal came earlier this year. Since purchase, I have kept the mods mild. This is my daily driver, afterall. My main purpose with the car is to make it usable and live-able on a daily basis in New England and have fun with it. I'm not out to build the fastest 92x, or maybe even the "prettiest" 92x. I'm out to make my car an extension and expression of myself... and to forever maintain the feeling, as you walk away from your parked vehicle, stop and turn around to sneak a peek, "...I'm so happy that car there... IS MINE!" Obligatory Listing of Modifications As I said, I bought the car at Stage 2, with a Perrin Flat Panel filter, STI up-pipe, Autochrome SS Turboback, and a Magnaflow Muffler. Here's a video that the original seller posted: It's only been 5 months of ownership, but here are some of the other things I've added since then: - Cobb was unmarried, a Forge MBC was installed, and a tune (Open Source) was performed by a local NASIOC member - To ease oil changes, I installed a Fumoto valve. Easily the best money I've spent, since I rack up a ton of miles (another reason to keep mods on the conservative side). - I picked up a KartBoy Short Shifter and installed that, along with an STI Titanium shift knob. - I installed a Pioneer AVIC F90BT, and hardwired a Escort 9500i - I have decals and stickers (we all know how much HP they'll add! ), seen below- A couple DIY mods: Home Depot Lip and painted grille - Minor mods like: One-touch unlock, key fob mod, fog light mod, and added an additional cigarette lighter adapter. A better organized listing of mods can be found here Onward, to the pictures! SAABaru Tecnica International (It doesn't have STI go-fast bits... so maybe I'm a poser... but I thought this was funny, so I designed the decals and had a local NASIOC member help cut them): The emblem gets mixed reviews - I love it, but here's the AVIC F90BT, KB SS and STI shift knob: No, it might not be the fastest... but it puts a on my face:![]() There are some very nice, very well done Saabaru's out there... so I thank you for allowing me to indulge and post a bit about mine. ![]() - HP |

The one and only STI Swapped Saabaru Linear. (not that it matters, they are really impreza wagons anyway)
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here is the Story of my Saabaru. I am probably like many of the people on the board, I saved my money from years of working to purchase a car when I needed it. The time rolled around Senior year of college. I’d always been a car enthusiast, and I heavily autoxed my previous car, a mazda 6. I have quite a few friends who drive subarus and I really enjoyed them, and knew that a WRX could be made to be pretty quick in stage 2 form. So I set out searching for a WRX. A few visits to people selling them, and they were all mostly in bad shape, or tons of miles. I was searching through NASIOC classifieds, and came across a very unique car. It was a 2005 Saab 9-2x Linear 2.5i, no options, Swapped with a STI motor + ECU. I believe it is still to this day, the only car of its kind, being a linear (read, non turbo), but STI swapped. The car is actually known on the 92x boards as “The STI swapped Linear”, as I guess there is only one. Now I know these cars are really impreza wagons, but a man can dream, right? With advice with what to look for from my Subaru friends, I went to check the car out the very same day, and bought it. Here is its History. -Car was bought, Driven 8-9K miles without an oil change -Engine #1 dies -Previous owner decided to swap in engine on his own -Engine #2 lasts 50 miles before also dying, turned out to be a Katrina motor, heavily rusted cams + ETC. -Owner Decides he wants to do it right and do it once, Employs Godspeed/Tuning Factory to do a 2004 STI Engine + Wiring harness + ECU swap. -5k miles later, owner decided oil changes were optional again -16k miles later, Engine #3 Dies, oil starvation. -Previous owner has a 2005 STI longblock dropped in by a local dealership -6k miles later, Turbo oil feed like explodes, oil everywhere -After fixing the oil feed line, and losing his job, previous owner throws in the towel. -I Buy the car (I like to think I saved it) -One week later I have fixed the following: CEL for system too lean Replaced RS fuel pump with Walbro 255 Added boost, Oil Pressure, and Wideband monitoring gauges Removed, cleaned and replaced 90% of bolt on modifications to the car. -Mods Added in the past year include Full suspension, brakes, all gauges, turbo replacement, all exterior mods, both sets of wheels+ tires, catback, endlinks, Intake, Transmission, many of the engine bolt ons, Full Retune.. ETC Lets just say my wallet has been steamrolled, More than once. This is a self wrenched car. Everything i've done to the car i've learned and researched, and purchased online (thank you nasioc vendors), and spent the countless hours of wiring all of the electronics, laying on my back in the driver footwell running wires (that is probably the most painful position to work on these cars in), pulling apart the the entire front end just to clean the fmic pipes (strapping a billy mays "awesome auger" drill to a workbench and using it as a polishing wheel), the entire 6 speed transmission swap, ( a 3 day, 48 hour marathon of monster energy drinks), to claybaring the entire exterior, and polishing and waxing the car. When i visit my parents house (they have air tools), they have on more than one occasion taken some lawn chairs into the garage just so they can spend some time and talk to me. ![]() Mod List[/b] ENGINE 2005 STI Engine + ECU + Full wiring harness VF-30 Turbo (replaced the vf39 which was broken) TurboXS FMIC system TurboXS BPV APS 65mm Short Ram Intake Watts Catch can Coolingmist Meth Injection System Group-N Engine Mounts Mishimoto Aluminum Radiator GTSpec Ver 2 Headers + 3 bolt uppipe Godspeed 3” SS Downpipe Replica Blitz 3” SS Catback Walbro 255 Fuel Pump “Ride5000” Hybrid Boost Control System 1 Step Colder Iridium Plugs Innovate LC-1 Wideband 100% Self Tuned using Romraider DRIVETRAIN 2004 STI 6 Speed Transmission ( 5 speed didn’t last long @385wtq, Meth is a helluva drug.) (Thanks to the massive opensource community at Romraider.com, and input here from people like Vaus, RiftsWRX,Phatron, the list goes on., But ESPECIALLY DFL2.5RS, (IRL buddy who has a purely epic bugeye) THIS CAR IS RACED. It has seen at least a dozen and a half drag passes and 7+ Autox Days. A month after buying it, I raced it at winged warrior, and was the fastest import in C class. Over the past year, this car has put more smiles on my face than probably anything else. The confused looks and questions this car receives are priceless. The people in the Subaru community I meet have always been very nice, and we can always share stories about problems and long nights in the garage. It’s a great community that I’m proud to be a part of. Thanks for reading about my Saabaru! I hope you like it as much as i do! Last edited by arch4life; 10-27-2009 at 06:24 PM. |
