Default When did Imprezas lose that boxer rumble and start sounding like civics?

Last night, I followed a base impreza, probably a 2005-6 model. This car had an aftermarket exhaust system on it. Normally, I'd expect to hear the boxer rumble that these Subarus are known for. However, as he revved the hell out of her, she sounded like an old modded civic or integra. WTF
I thought it sounded like ****

Bonus: The license plate said PLMEOVR

Actually pretty oontzy!

2.5i's come with equal length headers from the factory. As said above, the boxer rumble that you cherish actually comes from the inferior design of unequal-length headers.

I think it may have something to do with the headers.

The headers, which are of equal length, are the culprit to your Honduuuuuuh sounding complaint. It actually raised the Hp of the NA Imprezas, when paired with the OEM upgrade cam.

However, the boxer growl is still quite prevalent in the cabin when paired with an intake (I would suggest the Williaty's).

Srsly, I'm curious, why is that an inferior design? Does it create a misfire of sorts?

no. I'm just wondering why Subaru chose to install unequal length headers on the car, if they are known to be inferior. Furthermore, if equal length = better, I'm surprised everyone didn't mod their subies to be equal length. Perhaps the performance difference is minimal?
