I've been through a few that might qualify:
87 Dodge Dakota: burned more oil than gas
86 Dodge Daytona Turbo: the turbo slowed it down, I think
87 F-150: cooling system leaked out completely, overheated, blew
95 Protege: Auto; a fire started under the dash, tranny went out
85 crx: vacuum lines from hell
87 crx: 4- spd 40whp
89 civic hatch: was promised a title but never got it. rallied it to death
me and my friends got on this kick. We started buying running junkers from tow companies and drove them into the dirt. We went through 3 Metros, a Trecel, and a 626. One sank in a river

Dodge Ram... 50

Seriosly. Made by Mitsubish for Dodge. The air intake hose came off, I couldn't go above 45 on the freeway. Almost got ran over by a semi. Ziptied it up and ran with that till I got rid of it.

When I was about 12 or 13 my dad bought one of these

We got it for $500 and sold it a year or two later for like $800, we had no idea what it was and this was before they became popular tuner/drift cars.

Seems to be a rite of passage, to have a crappy car when you first start driving. Fortunately, I have only had one crappy car. It was my first, a 75 VW Super Beetle. Love hate relationship with that thing. When you are a Jr/Sr in HS, it is great to have ANY car! $10 would fill it for most of the week. Then I drove it 130mi round trip to college over a mountain pass 3-5 days a week for two years. Not so great.

In the 3 1/2 years I drove it, it went through 2 engines, one was very expensive for a bug, and countless other parts. I put A LOT of money in that thing. I will say working on it so much taught me a lot about cars. Most everything I know is self taught, I got my mechanical sense from my grandfather on my mom's side, my dad bless him has absolutely none, so I got zero garage time growing up. Very frustrating growing up wanting to fix things, take them apart, etc, and have no guidance.

Joys of a 75 VW super beetle.
1.6L fuel injected engine, 49Hp (4 less than the 73 with a carburator!) 0-60? Uhh Yea.

Miles of fuel hose that didn't like the higher pressure of fuel injection. It would rot out in our desert summers. I was constantly fixing fuel leaks, sometimes on the side of the road. I am amazed I never had a engine fire!

Open the wind wings for defoging the windshield. Going through a puddle would get water in the heat exchangers and instantly steam the interior of the car.

Manually adjusted valves, every 3K miles.

The fuel injection used an air box with a flapper and rheostat that controlled fuel flow. One good backfire and the flapper would blow apart. Junkyard air box = $300!!

I finally could not stand it any more after too many break downs and not making it to class. Got a 95 ranger v6 with manual. That truck was extreamly reliable for 13 years and 276K miles. Finally traded it in and got my 08 Impreza as a DD

The beetle still sits in the yard at my moms, my step dad thought at one point he was going to do a "pan up restore" it. I told him good luck. The car even if it was in good shape would be worthless, he would be throwing his money away. A couple times they have asked if I wanted it. I just laugh.

1967 VW Bug. Fun car, but I was working on that damn thing every weekend. Something was always broken or ready to break. That being said, I really miss that old car.

'93 Subaru Legacy L.

I bought it with 100k miles for $4k. I probably sunk another $4k into it in repairs by the time I got rid of it three years later at 130k miles.

As far as I'm concerned - the much vaunted reliability of elderly Subarus is a myth. My Legacy never left me stranded, but it needed something fixed on a near monthly basis. Heater core, half shafts, radiator, bearings, brakes, wiper motors, etc.

We finally had to get rid of it after the 02 sensors were shot and triggered the CEL. The car would run fine with the CEL, but wouldn't pass emissions and we didn't think it was worth tearing the motor down just to replace the 02 sensors for the sole purpose of passing emissions.

The worst and my first! 1987 Chrysler Daytona, fire engine red, dubbed the ferrari by my friends. This thing had a 90/10 weight distribution and ate trannies like you can't imagine (3 over its lifetime).

What a POS!

The worst would be the first car I owned. It was only the worst in a relative way. It was a 1984 Subaru GL station wagon. It's incredible how weak it was thinking back on it. (something like 65 horsepower I think - and the spare tire was stored in the engine compartment) but it certainly did last. Was around 225k miles by the time I was done with it in 1999. It was a very sturdy car, though.

well, I think i have 2 that would qualify:

1.) 1979 or 1980 (can't remember) - Ford LTD Crown Victoria coupe. Yes, you heard me right, it was a two-door. Never mind the fact that each of those doors was the size of two of my wrx doors. Anyway, it liked to stall when going around corners, had bent valve lifters so sounded like crap, and had mystery fog that came out of the vents when you would slide the temp control from cool to hot. Oh, and I had a great drive home one day when the master cylinder went out. E-brake FTW!!!

2.) 1984 Mercury Sable. My dad bought this for me when I was in college (1993 or so.) He wasn't the best car buyer and thought the tow hitch on the back was a good thing on a car with 160,000 miles. The car had peel off paint, blew a headgasket and had all sorts of electrical problems. I think it was broken more time than it was running while I had it. I didn't have much money to fix it so it sat alot.

after those 2, the 1993 Ford Probe (not GT) I got in '95 was a dream car....it was also the first car I ever had with less than 100K on the odo. I think it had 60K and it seemed new to me...

1989 Cavalier Z24 I bought for $600 back in 1998. drove it for over a year before selling it for $500.

It was my first car so I have good memories of it. It never gave me trouble but it still was a piece of crap.
