1997 subaru impreza outback sport

The clutch slipped like no tomorrow, merging onto a highway was murder. Window seal leaked and driving was like skydiving with so much wind noise. Front bumper was hanging on by a piece of thin plastic cord. More dents and scratches than ever. But it was a fun shaggin' wagon for a while.

I've had 3 super crappy cars that I can think of. My 1st car was a '80 Chevy Caprice Classic coupe with a 305 4-barrel. It had a rebuilt engine with only 30K on the rebuild, and it ran like a champ. BUT... The guy I bought it off of was a friend of mine and a raging alcoholic. That car was involved in 3 crashes with cars, and 2 crashes with houses before I got it. I got it for $175 and it literally didn't have a straight piece of metal on it. My nickname, back in high school, was "Conan" and my friend spray painted it onto the whole driver's side of the car. I gave it a "Gorilla Monsoon" wrestling figure for a hood ornament. The best "feature" of that car was its "cigarette snuffers". 2 holes burned into the middle of the front bench seat for people to extinguish their cigarettes. I drove that car all the way to Panama City Beach, Florida, for spring break, with 5 other people in it and all their luggage. Got in a wreck on the way down there and shattered the plastic grill which supported the headlights. So we stopped off at a hardware store and duck taped a 2x4 to the front bumper so the headlights would stay up. By the fifth day in Florida, it was one of the most popular cars cruising the strip at night. Eventually broke the tranny trying to show a buddy how surprisingly "fast" the car was. lol

2nd car was a '80 Datsun 200SX; my first stick. The guy I bought it from told me upfront that it had NO brakes. No exaggeration, it would take more than 300 feet to slow down from 40 mph. I delivered pizza in it for a week before I could afford the brake repairs. When I finally took it in to the shop, to get fixed, the mechanic brought me out to the car and snapped 2 of my brake rotors in half with a pair of dikes. Only the left front corner had pads left. Slid that car into a curb at 10 mph, during a winter sleet storm, and it was so rusty that everything bent on it.

3rd car was a '79 Pontiac Firebird with a POS 301 2-barrel. The choke didn't work on it, so every morning, in the winter, I would tape the choke closed until the engine was warm. But worse than that, it had some kind of starter heat-soak problem. If I shut the engine off, after driving awhile, it wouldn't start up again because the starter would crank to slow and sound very erratic. I'd either wait for the starter to cool down (45 mins?), or find a cup of water and throw it on the starter. I finally blew the engine while doing a burnout.

Sorry for the encyclopedic post, but with the crap I've owned I felt it was necessary.

Worst car ever 91' VW Jetta. After a while I used to start it by using an electrical cord and touching it to the starter. Worst car. People used to call it the the "crip killer", because it was all red.

1987 Hyundai Excel. Excelled at nothing. Shift knob came off during a shift to third and I punched the radio. That hurt.

1988 GMC K1500 work truck. I bought it when it was 7 years old. It wasn't too bad for the first few years, and then it started falling apart. It was a stripped down model. No radio, forget AC.....there weren't even dash vents, no carpet, vinyl bench seat, 4.3L V6 with a 5 speed.

It was a beater, but it got the job done until I bought my 2001 GMC Sierra new in 01. That has been the BEST vehicle I've ever owned. No, I'm not joking.

1989 Toyota Celica. Bought it from a Junk Yard with 289k on it, headlights didn't flip, leaked about a QT of oil a week, the door panels were stripped off, no A/C obvi, the spare tire in the back was off a ford ranger. 350$ and i drove it for four months, fixed the headlights, just bought a 30 pack case of oil and kept in the trunk and filled her up every week (self sustaining oil changes) then sold it for 400$. She was fun, and the car I perfected how to drive a manual on!

That can't be considered a crappy car. Those Toyota truck fans of us in the states would have killed for this!

My crappest car was a 1995 Neon. Had it for 6 months before a early 90's Acura Integra pulled out as I was driving through a parking lot and smashed into the driver side rear door. Totalled the Neon, cracked the turn signal lens on the Integra.

'96 cavalier. Unpainted bumpers. Manual windows. 3 speed auto and a tape deck that was probably used on the cavs for the previous 10 yrs. I swear that car used to audibly take a deep breath after i put the throttle down and before it accelerated (slowly). Head gasket slightly outlasted the warranty at 60k.

2001 Ford Focus ZX3, not mine, but my ex gf loved to take my Subarus so I'd get stuck with the Fucus.

It went through an alternator every 6 months, I pop started it all the way home once, that was horrible.
The ignition key cylinder collapsed, so you couldn't get a key in to start it.
The steering wheel got stuck in the lock position while in motion.
The antenna flew off and the assembly dropped into the roof.
The wiper fuse would blow any time it rained hard.

It would wait until I was half way from my destination and had no cell coverage to strand me on the road side.

Haha my fiancée had a pos 98 or so ford contour in baby blue . That thing would rattle like crazy over every bump and shake side to side. This car scared the crap out of me once. I was pulling up to my buddies house and thought it would be funny to pull up WOT in the crap mobile..... As I tried parking and come to a stop, the motor wouldn't stop revving and the throttle was stuck open. I had the breaks fully pressed to the floor but the tires where still peeling out lol. Eventually slammed it in park and had a bunch of service lights pop on the dash. Never floored that car again

The best "crappy" car I ever owned was my 89 240SX. I bought it from a little old lady for $500, replaced a brake line, resoldered the hatch wires, and put an oversized set of tires I had on it. I picked it up with 300,000 km on it and put another 50K on over 2 years. Absolutely everything worked on it. Power windows, mirrors, great heat, bulletproof engine and trans... I took that thing mudding, played bumper cars with it, towed other cars out of ditches, did burnouts whenever I could, and generally abused the snot out of it. By the end it was burning about a quart of oil every fill up. When it got down around 2L in the pan the rods would start knocking loudly. Filling it back up cured the knock. The fuel tank started to rust through and driving with the sunroof open would cause the car to fill with gas fumes, because the floor around the tank was also far from sealed. Eventually the rusted out frame rails and floor got to the point that the car was flexing whenever a ~300 lb person got in. I sold it to a local kid for $500.

the ectrical system was shot, going down hill on the interstate the line from the altenator to the battery would short out

the heater fan didn't work,

the entire clear coat was cracking

it blew pine needles from the vents over the entire two years that i owned it, i never parked under a pine tree.

it had diamond hard pine tree sap on the roof that i couldn't get rid of

there was something that looked like a blood stain from someone being stabbed on the headliner

the rear antisway bar was useless i noticed no difference in body roll from when it was hooked up and when it wasn't

you could scrape sludge out from the valve cover

the mount for the alternator was loose, you could move the altenator ~10 degrees (temp fixed with jb weld)

got rid of it when the cost for repairs @ the moment would be more that the car was worth by a long shot and got my leggy
Idk why, but this made me laugh

^THIS! I drooled over the Hilux everyday when I was over in Brazil for a number of years.

To contribute.
Bought a turbo civic, actually before I left for Brazil just because I needed a car... Thought I was buying the DOHC B16 when in reality I was buying a SOHC D16 engine... fail on so so many levels.

I have a 1997 2wd, 4cyl ranger with no AC so I feel your pain. It's a pretty ****ty truck and I refuse to drive it in northern VA traffic. I need to donate it to charity before tax season.

You have got to be kidding. That thing might not be fast, but it is built like a tank and is the go to vehicle in parts of the world where reliability and ability in difficult conditions are paramount.

I traded a washer and dryer for it in 1987 and traded to someone else a couple of years later for some guns. I had forgotten all about that car until I got a call from the State Police telling me it had been involved in a high speed chase and totalled two police cruisers. The guy I traded to never got it in his name. I got a call 3 years later from the Atomic Wrecking yard telling me it showed up there and they were needing permission to crush it. I should have named it "Christine"
This is late but I sure hope those gun's he traded you for the car were legitimate and don't have a bad history for your sake.

My first car was a 92 Chevy Astro. Thing was a beast. Was painted three different colors and interior was trashed, but I could load up so many people in that thing. Alot of good times.

My worst car was a 2001 Golf 1.8T. A mechanical nightmare. I'll never own another euro car. Ended up trading it in for my WRX so it served some use.
