Default Mitsubishi Evo X a mild mid-life tweak

Quote:
Mitsubishi has given the Japanese market Evo X a mild mid-life tweak. The changes include chunkier side skirts and the use of lighter plastics for the front bumper, which weighs 1.5kg less than the item it replaces.

A new colour LCD screen sits between the speedo and the rev-counter. The interior trim has been improved and extra insulation has been fitted to increase refinement.

Mitsubishi has also announced that it is dropping the five speed manual from the flagship GSR Premium Edition, replacing it with the six-speed twin-clutch SST transmission.
Mitsubishi didn't confirm whether the changes would be applied to UK models

I had been reading about this on the Evo forums for a while. Mitsubishi headquarters brought a few 2010s to a meet a few weeks back, including that version of the MR with a sunroof and a lip spoiler (as opposed to the big one that we're all used to). The new center display in the instrument panel is sweet looking, but really no more useful than the previous digital display. In my opinion, the differences are definitely not worth the price increase that the 2010s have over the 2008s, but hey, it's still a fun car to drive either way. I figure maybe in 2011 we'll have an increase in engine output.

Also, the 2010s now get the same (better-looking) black taillights that the Ralliart has, rather than the all-red lights. So that's another good thing.

2010 EVOs are already on sale and the GSR still has a 5-speed manual transmission.

I've always liked the evo x as fars as looks. The car looks a bit bland without the rear wing. I wish they would drop the price a bit.....

And JDM model years aren't the same as ours, I'm guessing the 2011 USDM version will get the change.

The GSR is available with both transmissions in most parts of the world. Many markets do not have a "MR" edition.

The nice thing about the new LCD (other than it being multi-colored) is that it shows your coolant temp at all times. On my 08 you have to scroll through menu to get to coolant temp; you can't be looking at mpg and coolant temp at the same time

The death of the manual transmission as we know it. If cars like these are getting their true stick tranny phased out, what car out there deserves one? Oh yeah, the wrx's and STi's. Huge mistake for mitsu.

I cant comment about the situation in the USA but here in Aus the EVO outsells the STI. In fact since the release of the sti I have seen less than 5 on the roads. Frankly it is very rare to spot a new shape sti at all.
Not that there are EVO's everywhere, they are also not that common but they are more common than the very rare sti.

If by overpriced you mean that it has better features and it costs less than a similarly equiped STI, then yes, it is overpriced.

The pictures depict a car that is understated and classy, while being able to out-handle pretty much anything else in its price bracket. I do like it....and I am someone who likes the STI and its hatch body-style.

As somebody who has owned 7 subarus, I was tempted to get into a loaded GSR this year. So I got the dealer down to a price I liked and then went and saw the car. I talked him down from 36000 to 28000 on a dealer demo car with 800 miles. I walked up to the car and poked around at the exterior. The door handles felt like they would break off in my hand. The doors themselves felt like I could move them even when they were closed. The interior is worse. The turn signals and headlight controls felt 'unscrewed' in and had several degrees of slop before they would engage in any direction, and they felt unnaturally light. The 5sp felt horrible and completely unlike the EVO9 my buddy had. The interior bits looked old well beyond the 800 miles it had on it.

IN short, I always thought the STI and EVO were on a level playing field in terms of quality and performance. If the STI costs more, its because it is a well put together car, and you cannot imagine how cheap an EVO feels until you scrutinize one.

I know the performance numbers are there for the EVO, but the things you have to live with day to day are abysmal. What I do not understand, how can everything be so cheap and the car weigh so much?

YOu guys can keep your EVO's, the quality difference is night and day.

Both brands have priced themselves out of their young market. This is compounded by the STI going to very undesirable Hatch style in US and insurance premiums. Most are sold with large discounts.

Never had any 'interior issues' with my VIII. If you want to consider the quality of plastic on the door highly on your car wish list, that's up to you. I love the stuff that matters: Momo steering wheel, Recaro seats, simple dash and no buttons all over the damn place for Bluetooth/Navi/stereo. Obviously, I am still not a fan of the X, inside or out. The performance numbers are there, but I'm just left thinking how much better it could have been in Evo IX trim.

Having owned two Evo IXs and test driven several Evo Xs, while the it certainly does have some interior quality issues, but the 5-speed is a lot smoother than the previous one and doesn't have the rifle bolt-like feel of when you shift like in the older ones.
