Default OT; Saturn news thru the grapevine

I've recently returned from Spring Hill, Tennessee for Saturn training. The Sport coupe w/ body package, sport intake and exhaust, and different spoiler will debut anytime now at dealers.

The entire line of S-series cars will cease production in August, and the Ion will take its place. The Ion is slightly bigger with the 2.2L DOHC engine currently used in the L-series. The 2.2L has built in engineered provisions for a turbo but the first few years wont have turbos.

I have pics of the Ion taken with my son's simple camera, if they develope well i'll post them.

I think the ION is pretty cool lookin (atleast the outside) - espesially those suiside doors. But I think the ION is one of the cars with the ccenter mounted instrament cluster - now thats something that i'll NEVER understand why its done - very poor desicion (seems to me its just trying to be different, just for the sake of being different). Ofcourse too bad its taken sooo damn long to introduce the damn car - the S needed a replacement BAD.
Post those pix - if I remeber correctly, that car will be coming out in a really nice lookin shade of blue.

Piece about the new Ion in the June edition of CAR (UK).. 12 years and that's all they could come up with? Puke.. There's a revolution going on in small cars (starting with the Focus hatch), and GM is sleeping once again.

The 2.2 is a Vauxhall/Opel engine.. It's a decent one, but more unoriginality from Saturn & GM in general as they market this great "import fighter".

Doesn't it look like a car that would have been GREAT about 5 years ago - but now its OK.
On the sleeping giant thing - I would be the LAST person to ddefend GM on letting the world pass it by technologically, but Now with their new Head od Design I see possibly LOTS of good things happening (FINALLY). Also, while the Saturn might not be following the new small car trend, but from what I've read, the Chevy version (next-gen Cavalier - if its called that) will have a version that competes with the likes of the Focus hatch.
FINALLY some small American cars that car compete with the likes of the Civic and Corolla - atleast I hope so.

Default speaking of Cavaliers

the Ion looks very much like the Cav. underneath. It has lost the Saturn independent rear suspension (booo!). Ya the engine will be healthier, but performance amongst the twisties will be gone.

I think Saturn is killing itself by eliminating the "S" cars. It was their meat and potatos. They should have revised it with a 2litre and ballsier styling. The Sport Coupe this summer will be its last hoo-ra.
pics are being developed...this week I sware
