Default Orciari Headlights - Adjustment?

I searched around for a similar post, but haven't found anything that matched. Here's my dilema:

I recently installed the Orciari WRC-style headlamps in my '02 WRX, and they work great - except that I can't get the low-beam adjustment motors to do anything. I've temporarily resorted to driving around with my high beams pointed (manually) lower than normal.

The wiring is correct, including the "black box", for which I took apart and figured out the circuit schematic. There are three wires from each assembly that are supposed to hook up to a switch or something, but this is where I'm lost. The three wires for each assembly are +12V, COM, and "signal". It's that signal wire that I can't figure out.

I tried +12 and COM to see if the signal wanted to be pulled high or low. I figured that even if it is expecting some kind of PWM signal, giving it 100% and 0% should do something.

Anyone have a clue? I think the motor *might* be the same setup as the UK300 headlamps, but I can't be sure. Any help is greatly appreciated!

(If the schematic would be helpful, I can scan it in and post it)

Thanks!

I have the UK300 headlamps. I do not have the separate control unit for the headlamps.

To adjust mine I removed the motor control circuit board and just soldered two wires to the dc motor. See attached image.

To adjust the headlamps I just put a couple of jumpers on the connector use the car battery and swap polarity for up and down.

I believe it is the same assembly as the UK300 lights. Do you have the 4-position levelling switch or no? It looks like you have everything else correct. The switch has 4 terminals, GND, 12V, and two signal wires that run to the levellers on each side. Can you tell me which terminals are which on the Orciari connectors? Here is the schematic for the levelling system in the cars that come equipped with it:

I received the switch and then my car was in an accident so I haven't been able to work on the problem. It'd be nice to get the wiring connector that fits into the back of the switch. I have an extra set of orciari lights now due to the accident, so I can just play around with a 12v battery and figure out the wiring whenever I get them back.

dwx,

It looks like the systems are slightly different (from the look of your schematic). The weather has been terrible here, so I haven't had a chance to try out any of the suggestions. If anyone is interested, I'm attaching the schematic of the "black box" for the Orciari headlamps. I have no idea if it is the same modual as that used for the UK300's. One thing that is interesting is that it seems like it's looking for a pulse from the motor (i.e., the black/green wire from the motor to the black box seems to be an input signal, whereas the blue/red wire out to the control "switch" is really just a voltage output). I think this circuit is a feedback compensator, but it's not making any sense to me why they had to be this complicated.

Here's the schematic:

Once again, any additional info will be helpful. When this is all figured out, I'll post something in the Mods section.

Thanks again!

The schematic I posted are the schematics for the UK/European levelling system from the service manual. The Orciari lights just tap into those wires, which exist on those model of WRXs that already have beam adjusters stock. We just don't happen to have the wiring in place on our cars. I have my extra set of lights back now as well as the 4-position levelling switch shown in that schematic, so it shouldn't be all that difficult to figure out what is what since I can do it all out of the car. I won't be able to get to it until next week though.

Just got home yesterday, I'll probably take a look at it later this week or this weekend. I'll let you know.

I used the suggested "take the motor apart" method and it worked for me, but I'd still love to have the switch. In addition to the schematic that I attached earlier, there is (fortunately) another circuit inside of the motor housing. When I get a chance in the next few weeks, I'll be able to put the two together and figure out what the "switch" does and if there are other options.
