Default Toyota Launches Series Rival?,Mark X-Saloon

The Mark X will be formally unveiled at this Wednesday's Tokyo motor show.

Quote:
This is the new shape Toyota X saloon, which the company hopes is a match for the BMW 5-series
On paper, the uppercrust rear-drive Mark X is very much a machine in the BMW mould, although it’s on the market in Japan for thousands of pounds less.

This latest-generation X kicks off in three grades, standard, premium and sports type. It also boasts a fair helping of Lexus tech underneath to push dynamics and image.

There are two petrol V6 engines available; the 200bhp 2.5-litre engine is a detuned version of the 4GR-FSE unit from the Lexus IS250.

Likewise, the range-topping 314bhp 3.5-litre engine is shared with the Lexus GS350. A six-speed auto transmission is standard.

With front double-wishbone and rear multilink suspension, the 4730 mm Mark X is again not far off the Lexus IS/GS family, but the cabin treatment is more dour and workmanlike, and highly conventional.

The Mark X will be formally unveiled at this Wednesday's Tokyo motor show, but is not expected to come anywhere near Europe.

Instead, this will be Toyota’s BMW wannabe in Japan and some parts of Asia.

More boring and plain than the Hyundai Genesis... I think yes!

Seriously? 5 Series competitor? Its a fancy RWD Camry with retardeder looking head and tail lamps with an Altezza grille that doesnt quite fit. And WTF is going on with that A pillar transition!?!?! And front fenders?

Why does everything that Toyota turns out look like someone gave a left-hook to a meaty turd?

I must be the only person here who likes it... wish this would be the next ES350 (hopefully without unexpected self-driving syndrome)

I completely agree. There is way to much going on with that car.
BMW either a) didn't even acknowledge that Toyota said this car was aiming for the 5 series; or b) laughed their asses off and went out for a beer.

Toyota doesn't give a damn what BMW thinks; they've been selling these things since 2004... and it's predecessor, the Mark II, since the 1960's. Turns out there's a nice sized market in Japan that want a luxury car but not necessarily snob appeal. This, obviously, is the exact same reason why Acura/Lexus/Infiniti were created in the first place... so the Japanese companies could sell those cars here.

And this same market is the same kind of people who like the Genesis.

Henceforth this is not a 5-series competitor. Pretty much no one who is looking at a 5-series will look at one of these....or a genesis.

So the title of this thread/article is moot at best

Why is Toyota copying GM? Toyota has Lexus to make luxury vehicles why do they need to rebrand lexus stuff as toyotas and pretend it competes with BMW when it competes with Lexus more thoroughly? It doesn't make much sense to me.

It isn't competition...unless it truly outperforms the 5. Which is unlikely, but possible.

Then, the die-hards still won't consider it, but others might.

That's modern journalism for you. Toyota will continue to make profits on them, the sun will continue to rise, etc.
