Default HTC Pure vs iPhone 3G vs iPhone 3GS. FIGHT!

Background: My HTC Tilt has been flawless with WM 6.1 and 6.5 so far. Primarily, I use it for the following (in order of importance):

1. Email (Exchange and IMAP)
2. Texting
3. Tethering to PC
4. Light web surfing

HTC Pure:
Price: $50
Pros: Familiar with 6.5, would reflash the ROM of course. Even with stock, its zippy, smooth and feels clean with the standard WM interface. I know it works with everything I use on a regular basis, although web browsing isnt the best.

iPhone 3G:
Price: Free
Pros: Have no idea, havent really played with one longer than 5 minutes.

iPhone 3GS:
Price: $199
Pros: Same as above, but supposedly faster than 3G. Enough to be really noticable?

So, which should I choose?

Based on all the problems I've had with my iPhone lately, I would not get another.

What problems have you had? I am on my second iPhone (renewed my contract) and have had zero problems.

Coma mode
Restarts randomly
Forgets I have an internet connection, requires restart to fix
Podcast syncing was completely ****ing broken up until last week
Randomly has not shown e-mail messages
Yesterday decided it had to redownload all my exchange mail, for no reason
Slows to a snails pace
Randomly forgets which way its orientated and doesn't want to go back
Takes 5-10 seconds to load my text messages, which didn't happen before

I've had many other issues, no idea why its a POS now, when I got it at 2.21 it was fine.

I have experienced some of those problems, but not all. Mainly it the slow down, but that is fairly rare, and usually only after I have been streaming/watching videos for extended periods of time.

Have you tried wipe/restore?

BTW, personally, I have a 3G and the GS is that much quicker that I would definately get it.

Wow, dude that sucks.

My only gripe was that I had to wait to JB 3.1.2, now that that's taken care of, I don't have any complaints about my 3G anymore. Then again I don't bother checking my exchange mail because I don't want to deal with ALL my work on my phone, only the bits that people know my personal address.

Interesting. Thats a big enough list of problems that I may consider passing on the iPhone.

The Tilt 2 isnt int he running because I wanted something thinner, and I dont care as much about having a physical keyboard. In fact, this reply is likely one of the longest things I have typed on my Tilt in a while.

With your priorities the way they are, get the Pure.

The iphone excels most at web surfing in my opinion, and thats your last priority. No other phone comes close to browsing as well as the iphone does.

Tethering with a Pure would be easier, and you've already had a similar phone and been happy with it. Stick with it.

Oh, and get the 3GS over the 3G if you do go apple. The processor and ram are way faster (200mhz faster IIRC, 400 vs 600) I've been very happy with my iphones. Happier than I have ever been with other phones by a long shot.

I really like my 3GS, and the speed difference is absolutely worth it over the 3G.

It's the best for web browsing hands down, and the games and other apps are for the most part excellent (a full SimCity 3000 port on my phone? Nerdgasm) but, there are flaws.

-Unable to delete a single call log - clear them all or don't clear any.
-No proper time/date stamping on SMS/MMS.
-Orientation sensors can be a real bitch if you're lying in bed (constantly flipping to landscape) - they need an orientation lock.
-Autocorrect is sometimes amazing and sometimes the most annoying feature. Yes, you can turn it off.
-Battery life is...not so stellar. It's no big deal as long as you keep a charger at work/in your car.

Keep in mind this is with a stock 3GS. I know if you jailbreak you can at least fix the orientation lock issue.

All in all it's still my favorite phone. My old BB Curve still wins for messaging, but the iPhone takes the crown overall.

I've honestly never had that issue with mine. Aside from the buggy update which caused it to forget it was connected to the network (which was fixed in ver 3.1.2) it's never dropped calls on me and only once every few weeks do o get a 'call failed' message - about as often as with my Curve.

In the 2 years I have had an iPhone, not once I have ever had a dropped call. This be a service provider problem?

I admit, some of Kiels problems are kinda annoying, like the orientation and auto correction feature. These do not bother me enough to dislike my iPhone though.

I came from a Curve on AT&T to a 3GS, so it's not like I switched providers and I haven't switched where I'm using the phone (in and around Washington, DC).

AT&T still isn't officially supporting tethering with the iPhone. I haven't had any of the issues StuBeck has with my 3GS... although when I attempted to get tethering working I ended up screwing up my voicemail for a week. My dumb mistake, though. AT&T service sucks balls,... I wish I'd never left Verizon.

I say, if you have the pocket room, get the best free/cheap phone that can do tethering & texting and is good at being a phone (and a camera).. and spend $199 on a refurbished 2nd Gen 16GB iPod Touch to handle Exchange and web browsing.

But for $199 he can just get the 3GS which does all of that?

I really can not help you on that then. Everyone I know who that has an iPhone has not had this problem either. Maybe you just got a dodgy phone.

Or, it could be karma for being a mod on a certain forum?

.. on AT&T's network. Not worth the subsidy, IMO. Also, he wouldn't look like a douche when answering his phone.

Then again, he's in the NC Triangle.. so he probably wouldn't hate AT&T the same way I do living out in the boonies.

Multiple times, it doesn't do anything but make me have to put my music on manually again.

I've also had issues with calls lately, horrible quality or it drops halfway through ringing.

I forgot one other really annoying issue I had. Using Skype, after a little bit of time the sound quality would slowly degrade, and then drop the call completely. Only fix was to turn off the wireless, and turn it back on.

wow, that sucks. Is this a JB issue, or stock firmwares?

that has a lot to do with the carrier though. We switched from verizon here in RI. My old phones cut out all the time (3 areas on the way home from work AND no service at home). Got the BB bold first, then the iphone 2 days later (swapped). Both have no drops and both work at my house, but with ****ty reception. The BB was slightly better, but neither drop. Not saying there aren't issues elsewhere, just that it's region specific from what I've seen.

Stock. We have one of the best ATT networks in the country here in Rochester, and still have issues.

Personally I'd say the HTC Touch Pro 2 is a better competitor to the iPhone.

If you rely heavily on the syncing with Exchange you would be better served with the WM phone. The iPhone is nice but the EAS implementation leaves much to be desired. Apple is already becoming a huge player in the enterprise mobile market but they could easily and quickly dominate it if they would just implement EAS more fully.
