Cool OT: Any submariners in the MAIC?

I've always enjoyed submarines (video games, novels, etc) and now I'm starting to really consider going to OCS after college so I can be on submarines. So basically, I'm just asking you submariners what path you took, how it's working out for you, the in and outs of submarine and naval life. Thank you!

Hey, I can only help you out on the "naval life" part. Being on a ship = weaksauce! It's a terrible place, but you try to make the best of it. I was on one for four years. With that said, have fun!

I've been on subs for some time. I'm on shore duty at this time, so things are pretty good. Are you planning on doing NUPOC or are you planning on going straight to OCS?

I think I'm gonna go straight to OCS. I'm not majoring in something that would easily allow me to do NUPOC.

Nah, but I am a big fan....

I actually have 2 really good friends who are. One is about to retire to make the big bucks, at 40. They talk about it like it is the best thing on the planet. IIRC, they operate on Ohio class and Virginia class subs. I know little about them but it sounds like a promising venture if you have interest.

I was a bubble head. Submarine community if relatively small in the Navy. I was often told that Sub ratings fast-track you in the selection pools for advancement. I had a great time, visited tons of country's. BUT, the work is gruelling. Months at sea, and the hours you work make grown men cry. It's truly a love hate relationship.
