Default Turbo going or gone, need help!

Hey guys, looking for a little technical advise. My '04 Baja Turbo has begun to whine really bad when under load, and my dealer says the turbo is blown. So I'm turning to the board for some knowledge and advise!
1. The stock turbo is a TD04, right?
2. Can it be rebuilt?
3. Can any other turbo be a direct replacement?
4. Where is a good place to purchase a new turbo (or rebuilt, etc.)?
I have plenty of mechanical experience and will be doing it myself, I just need some info to get me started! Thanks!
BTW, I'm going to cross post this over on Scoobytruck also...

1. Yes
2. No
3. Not without tuning for it
4. Check the For Sale forum on here, usually plenty of people getting rid of their old turbos.

you can have the turbo rebuilt if it is not too badly damaged.

What all did you do to achieve this? Anything extra injectors, intercooler, ect...?

^What he asked... Plus, can it be driven without the "tune" for a bit without harm? Anyone know a good tuning shop in Phoenix?

310 on a 39? You must have done extensive mods to hit that. Or you have a SUPER agressive tune. or both lol.
If your turbo goes to the point of breaking up it can take the motor with it in extreme cases. I picked up a FP68HTA from JSCspeed. Grab injectors, a walbro255 and a fuel rail kit if you go bigger. There are so many other parts on mine its sad. Right now its in for a EJ257 shortblock and CP pistons + EWG setup. Basically, STAY STOCK unless you have deep deep pockets or a high credit line. HAHAHA Good luck fellow Baja-er!
Heres a link to TST with my mod list so far when I get the Baja back this week.

Default Blown Seals on a 04 WRX Turbo?

I am burning oil and going coolant every two weeks or so, pulled the intercooler this weekend and there was oil in it, does this mean the turbo seals are shot? Did A compression check all cylinders are 149-150psi.

See my smoky turbo post. I'm pretty sure I'll be needing a replacement soon too.

Just hit 101k and my turbo charger blew on my baja. $2k to fix. This should be fun. I miss my vehicle.

What blew on the turbo, hot side or compressor side? Do you still have the stock, catted up pipe on the Baja?

2K seems excessive for replacing the turbo.

I'm in the same boat with my Baja. Just shy of 100K and the turbo blew. New turbo from the dealer is $1100 plus about an hour of labor. That's the reason I am here, hoping to learn something and maybe find a used turbo to stick in. I was hoping for an aftermarket, but after seeing the tuning required I know it is back to stock.

I recently discovered that it wasn't my turbo that was blown but rather the valve cover gaskets. This is gonna cost me a bit to repair.

In the meantime, I bought a stock TD04 turbo off of a fellow NASIOCer. It is used, has 25k miles on it. It's pretty clean. I thought about keeping it and maybe sending it off to have it rebuilt and modified but I'd be willing to part with it for $125. My turbo is just fine.

Turns out there were a few problems going on but all fixed and she's back on the road! And not sure what side, but yeah, its the stock pipe.
