Default Engine Noise Question!

I'm looking to get my first Subaru.. I found this '05 Impreza RS with about 80k miles on it. Took it for a spin and it ran perfectly fine, but there was this grainy noise everytime i stepped on the gas. The best way I can describe it is that it was "grainy", and the revving noise was not muffled in anyway. Almost as if there was no sound insulation between me and the engine?

I was talking to a friend of mine, and he says that Subaru engine's are "caged in" and it makes that noise. Is this true?? I would love to buy this car, but this noise is the only thing keeping me from doing so. I never rode a Subaru so I'm not sure. Please help me out guys.

My newly bought '98 outback sport makes this noise too.
Its actually pretty f@$#ing loud. lol.
The boots on the CV axles are torn in half, so I guess they are going bad.
That is one of my theory's to why there's so much noise.
Not sure though.
