Default Open Track Challenge - Day 1

Hey everyone,

We're pretty tired, so I'm going to make this short. We got a late start and didn't begin our 11 hour drive down to Pahrump, Nevada until 4.5 hours AFTER we were supposed to register. We rolled into the track around 9:30am, missing our first session. We missed the 2nd session because there was still work to do on the car.

I made it out for the 3rd session and tried to figure out this crazy Bragg-Smith track. Lot's of turns, very tight and twisty. It was supposed to be a session to heat cycle a new set of tires, but after a few laps of getting familiar with the track, I decided to just drive hard. Good thing I did, because we missed the 4th and final session of the day. The sessions rolled by quickly and we weren't keeping a close eye on the schedule.

So, on a new track, with one session, our three fastest lap times were faster than all the other folks in our class from all of their sessions. After a hell week, we at least got to win the first event and take the lead in the Open Track Challenge for the Unlimited 3 class.

I'll try to keep you guys updated as we go. Hopefully www.opentrackchallenge.com will start their updates so you can keep track as it's happening.

Hi Gary,

Great result! I'm glad all of the hard work paid off. I hope you and the crew can keep it together for the rest of the event. I'll hopefully see you at Thunderhill on Thursday with the "spare" car.

Good Luck!

Sweet! Bravo!

They certainly have a compressed schedule. If that web site's correct, Gary did Willow Springs yesterday, and is doing Streets of Willow today. Then 4 more races ending on the 18th? Wow.

I went out to "streets" today. Gary set fastest time for the class on the big track and it looks like he'll repeat today. Barring something serious he's pretty much got the class win locked up.

Anyway, he's beating up on my friend (Mike) who is running second in the class but that's the way it goes.

I have some in car video of Mike following Gary around the Big Track as well as some outside stuff of Mike and Gary today. I will try to have it up this eve if possible. I'll start a new thread if I do.

The engine is courtesy of Cobb. The block is stock while the heads are prepped. I did the engine tuning on Saturday, just a couple of hours before they put the car in the trailer and left for Las Vegas. The rest of the engine package consists of a Vishnu Stage Zero plus VF30 turbo, custom race exhaust, Vishnu TEC-II engine control system, 550cc injectors and Vishnu fuel rails. I wish we had more time to tune the engine up properly but time literally ran out. The car hasn't even seen a dyno yet. All the ECU tuning was done on the street!

Cheers,
shiv

All of that stuff will have to come off the car once it goes back to USTCC racing huh? *sniff*

Gary,

you seem to be dominating Unlimited 3, how are your times compared to people in Unlimited 2?

Hi All,

I got to meet and hang around team SMR quite a bit this afternoon and early evening... they were still working hard when I left around 8pm. Team SMR as Gmaki said was having another good day today. They combine professionalism with fun... I really enjoyed getting to know them, and will be rooting for them the remaining time. Nothing is sewn up as yet as there is a lot of track time ahead, but Gary, Joel, and the mystery man are putting a lot of energy into making a strong showing for their team and Subaru.

I got a lesson in turbo swapping, which they made look relatively easy!

Thanks for the hospitality guys! Keep up the great effort!

gmaki,

Your friend Mike is a crazy driver. What car was was driving? What were their lap times around big track? 1:35? Lucky you, you got to watch. Willow Springs is exactly 320 miles from my house.

John
