Default Prodrive prepping Mini Countryman for WRC

Quote:
While we still await the arrival of the road-going Mini Countryman Crossover, which has now been delayed to March 2010, Prodrive is reportedly prepping the vehicle for a possible WRC entry for Mini. According to a report by Autosport, a World Rally Car version of the Countryman is likely to be launched at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

The publication says that Prodrive has been working on a new generation Mini WRC for much of 2009, developing the parts required without actually working on a base model.
ďRight now there is nothing to say and I donít think there will be anything to say until the spring, said Technical director David Lapworth.

ďThis is not an official statement from me, itís just the way things look. That said, itís going to be very difficult to keep this thing under wraps.

.. and the Mini's heritage has too many rally accolades for MINI to ignore the sport now that Super 2000 rules make it a competitive option.

Exactly.

I've been waiting for the day when the Mini would jump back into the game.

I still don't like the looks of the Mini crossover one bit. Maybe some rally car styling will help, but I doubt it.

At least it is one of the few instances where retro styling is appropriate.

The crossover looks hideous compared to the regular MINI, but it's nice to see BMW putting money elsewhere after F1.

New regs make alot of it standardized, and BME likely already has the platform set up.

WRC cars have little in common with road cars, and will have even less in upcoming years.

Default exclusive access to the upcoming Mini Countryman

Quote:
Autocar has had exclusive access to the upcoming Mini Countryman, which goes on sale from £16,000 in September. You can see our exclusive studio photos by following the link below:

More details of plans to promote the car and Mini in the World Rally Cham, pionship have also emerged, with reports in Autocar magazine suggesting a Prodrive-run team could be announced later this month.

Intercontinental Rally Champion Kris Meeke is being strongly linked to a drive with the team, alongside either former Subaru driver Chris Atkinson or double Junior World rally Champion Per-Gunnar Andersson.

Prodrive's sporting director Richard Taylor didn't comment on rumours the team was developing a Mini World Rally Car, and denied the team had signed any drivers.

"We don't have a car to put a driver in yet," he said. "We are always talking to drivers about what they might be doing and what we might be doing. Anyone who has won an international series has got to be worth looking at."

Meeke, who currently drives for the Peugeot UK team in the IRC, said: "I know of the Prodrive-mini rumours and my goal is to get to the WRC, but at the moment I have no other focus that with Peugeot UK and the IRC."

Prodrive ran Britain's only WRC champions, Colin McRae and Richard Burns, to their titles in Subaru Imprezas.

The Mini Countryman will go on sale with the choice of three petrol and two diesel engines, ranging in power from 89bhp in the One D Countryman to 181bhp in the Cooper S Countryman.

That STUPID pie-plate of a speedometer is enough to keep me from ever owning one.

The placement, sizing and styling of that speedometer is ridiculous - ruins an otherwise very cool little car.

I'm ashamed to admit I like it - as long as it doesn't have a $40k price tag and it would probably look better in a color other than that nasty off-white. Hopefully it's as fun to drive as its predecessors.

That's the way the speedo has always been in Minis, in the center of the dash. It's just remaining true to its heritage.

This. The tach is mounted in the correct place.. and there's a digital speedo on it... what's the big deal?

I bet it will not be as fun but still better than other cars.

Can you turn off the pie-plate center screens? That would be irritating at night. Or in the day, for that matter.
