Default Upgraded Transmission Ideas

Since Im building my motor now I need some ideas for a stronger tranny. Im more into drag racing. My car now is a 2002 wrx with the stock trans. Once the motor is built I will be looking at close to 350whp as an ultimate goal for a DD.

I read that PPGgears are good for 350+hp applications but are a little out of price range right now.

I read that RA gears are good up to 350hp. I dont slam my gears and my trans until now has held up to close to 300hp with no grinds *knock on wood*.

I also read that Legacy trans are close to the same as the RA gears for a lot cheaper but, I dont know what YEARS to look for as far as that and what's required for the swap. I saw one floating around here in the classifieds earlier this year.

***I need help on what choice to make and find out if anyone out here can help put a tranny together if i bought the gears.***

STI swaps are long and tideous. Theres so much to swap out. I had one lined up and he ended up backing out on me. Id be willing to get one but id need someone who really knows how to do the swap and all the parts required to do it. Also it needs to be either local or brand new so i know its not all jacked up.

Legacy Gt 5spd but, what year?

my ppgs are on their way to ak as of earlier today. once i get them together ill let you know how they are. andrewtech sells a more affordable option for the ppgs that is ppg1-2 and lgt3-5. seems to be the way to go on a budget.

if you wanna drag race and have a 6spd get a 07sti trans because the ratios are better for drag. otherwise build a 5spd.

That is essentially what I had on my old WRX. Andrewtech setup a PPG 1st-2nd and cryo'd STi-RA 3-5th. It worked fine for me and was about 1300 shipped.

I'm interested to see how this goes, as I'm sure I'll be needing to replace my gears here shortly.. lol. Of the couple of people that have been in my car since the build, each of them said the same thing.. "You started saving for a new tranny yet?" I'ma subscribe this to see what other options are out there..

The way I look at it is this...you're **** is broke now. You can't drive it. Why cheap out and get sub-standard products that will just end up failing and putting you in the same boat again...therefore you'll end up spending more money than if you just bought quality parts in the first place.

That's one of the good things about breaking things. It gives you the opportunity to make whatever you broke that much better.

Don't put the horse before the carriage.

If you rebuild your motor to put all the power to the world down, but your tranny isn't going to hold it...then what's the point? I would put more emphasis on your drivetrain than in your motor.

+1 to that. plus when stuff breaks you know what you need to upgrade. lol

but you also have to remember to leave a weak link that is easy and cheap to fix so that it will give before your expencive hard to replace parts. thats why im not going to upgrade axles. lol

That is exactly why I've stayed with a disc clutch rather than a puck.

Disc clutches will slip and absorb a lot of the shock an AWD launch will give your drivetrain. A puck will send all that shock to your drivetrain.

Plus, the disc is a crapload cheaper to replace than a transmission, axels, t-case, or a diff.

Roger that... Once the motor is built and my car is running again I will movve onto the trans and clutch. Stage one Exedy or an ACT street ftw. I may go the PPG route as well but we are moving in August so i need to figure out what to do with this house we bought, sell or rent. We may try to sell it first so i dont have the headache when im gone but renting is an option.
