The mudflap thread

I have a 07 STi and this is what I ended up using:

Quantity: 4 - IKEA cutting boards (comes in pack of 2 but they come with one black and one transparent grey/black) so buying 4 will = 4 black
Cost: $1.99 per pack


Quantity: 10 - 1/4" x 1 1/4" Hex Bolts (20 tpi)
Cost: $0.11 per bolt

Quantity: 10 - 1/4" x 1 1/4" Fender Washer
Cost: $0.18 per washer

Quantity: 4 - 1/4" Speed Nut Clips (20 tpi)
Cost: $0.92

Quantity: 1 - Black "FLAT" spray paint
Cost: $0.99

1) Cut the ikea mudflaps using the template they provided, the one that is marked in millimeters.


2) Google "mm to inches" converter

3) Mark and cut the mudflaps.

4) Spray the washers and bolts

5) Start on the back mudflaps. There are two holes already there exposed, so clip the "Speed Nut Clips" over the holes (4 total) and then attach the mudflaps to them.

6) This is the part that took me a while to figure out because with the STi's they have a full underbody diffuser, which I didn't want to mess with so here's how I attached the front mudflaps.

1. Remove the 3 plastic pop tabs using a screwdriver.
2. Start to pull back the wheel plastic inner lining slowly just enough to put your arm in it.
3. Starting from the bottom bolt and moving up, attach the bolt by pushing it through the hole and with your arm inside the fender (by pulling back the wheel plastic inner lining) twist the bolt on the back. Your going to have to do this by feel.
4. Tighten both up, with a open end wrench on the "bolt" end, and a screwdriver or wrench on the other end.
5. Do this for all three, remember to use the washer!
6. Tighten only enough to where it's snug because if you tighten too much it will start to warp the cheapy ikea cutting board material

7) Your done! Well almost, adjust the mudflaps accordingly because I guarantee, unless you're one with great eyesight, that you will put it on crooked the first time.

my ikea flaps are holding up still , but dam how do you get out of that much snow? i thaught central/north WI was bad for me with the drifts.

damn there not being any Ikea's anywhere near me... i wonder where else i could source these? eBay has the 2packs for 7 bucks. but that's dumb. maybe a dollar store will have them or something similar.

also, what color should i get? i ride a 2009 5 door 2.5i in dark gray metallic. i'm thinking yellow to match my headlights... but maybe black would look better? white?

If you are looking for other colors, try Target or WalMart. The closest IKEA is about 30mins from my house.

I just bought a set and am about to cut them up now, though they look more gray than black. Has anyone painted theirs? I am scared to because I think they'll chip super quick and I'll regret it. When I say paint them, I mean the whole thing...not just the sti emblem or anything. I actually plan on painting SUBARU in WHITE on them . But I want them to be a more solid black. Anyways any feedback would be great. Thanks

I got similar matts that I plan to custom make for y 2010 legacy, I'm wondering: how did you get the front two secured? what did u go through to get behind the wheel well covers?the rear are easy to fit on, but I'm not too sure how to get the front on.

what i meant by tools was a drill to make the holes.

Most auto supply places keep them in stock, any Autozone, Pepboys, O'Reilly's etc should have them.

I pulled this off this weekend, I added a little local flare to them.
Created the stencil and painted it on. Will put them on my subaru soon.

i just went to the local surplus store, and i picked up some rubber matting or whatever. anyway, got a 2ft by three foot section. it's a heavier rubber so i expect it to last a very long time. i just hope it's not going to be too floppy. floppy is good for parking lots, not so much for high speed. hopefully i can get them cut soon. and when i put them on ill take some pics, if anyone is interested, pm me, i have more rubber than i need, plus it only cost me $6! i swear everyone on here is an engineer or a person of gifted IQ, as are most people who love their subarus.
