Default European kid Pipe Dream, is there a market for old school Euro rally/sports cars?

I am originally from Spain, moved here in the 90s, since my early childhood -like the typical Spaniard kid- I've always had a fascination for rally, sporty light weight cars from the 60s-80s.

I am currently looking for the next career move since I was bought out and lost a six figure job in Corporate America with an OEM Tier One and have no desire to go back. I had enough of the Auto Industry but still love cars.

I've been considering importing rally and sports cars of this era into the USA. Since ebay/Amazon have now a global footprint getting parts would be no issue. Cars would come from my native Spain, France, Italy, not England due to RHD. I speak the languages of these countries so communication would not be an impediment.

What do you think? Is there a market for such vehicles in the USA.

Vehicles would fall into this category:
  • Selling Price $10,000 range, including transportation, registration, legal documentation.
  • Miles 150K max (200K kms).
  • Legally imported.
  • Age no less than 25 years old due to importation regulations.

Examples of vehicles I would consider importing:

I was born in one like this, olive green like the new Fiat 500 color.

There would absolutely be a market. I would be quite surprised if you could get cars in anywhere near good condition for under $10k though. If you could, I would be interested. An R5 or Alpina would be just ducky. Heck.....with air cooled Porsche prices not skyrocketing, I would expect that run of the mill used 911's in unrustedtohell condition would bring a premium.

$10K would be selling price to US customer including transport, fees, duties, broker, etc. My cost would have to be no more than $5,000 to make it viable so I would have to find vehicles with higher mile...errr...kilometrage. I would love to have a team of mechanics and body technicians to bring the cars to acceptable condition. Who knows I may be able to deduct my trips to Europe during my car/engine/parts scouting biz trips.

The business differentiator vs other importers would be the price point, no more than $10K.

I could even venture into procuring diesels or motorcycles too, I better stop dreaming.

I would rock that R5 turbo 2 all day long. I've dreamed of owning one of those since I was a teenager. Saw several while I was in Paris. Bad ass little cars.

In order to keep it under $10K you'd have to find them for absolutely paltry prices in Europe. That means there is a good chance you'll buy beaters which which won't be worth importing. Chances are margins on something like this are razor thin otherwise there'd be a large market of importing these since there is certainly demand. And I'm pretty sure none of the cars you posted in your pics sold for under $10K in last few years.

Also, don't forget state rules vs government's. Certain states might simply impeach your car despite it being over 25 years old. Example: CA still has emissions for everything made after 1976. Meaning nothing truly European without serious smog equipment can apply. And so on. You need to know all these rules too.

No, Skylines fall into the under 25. Those that were legitimately (if you want to say that) brought in by Motorex cost $60-$65k. Those that "well, it's registered and titled in Florida so it must be legit" are under $20k.

Over 25 years.......weeeeeee

Cosworth RS anything..... would be sweet and I am almost sure my wife wouldn't kill me lol.

Seriously though, as a foreigner in the States, I would love to see cars like these making it over here. Especially if that pricing is realistic. So many great cars have never been seen here, would be awesome to rock a classic old rally car for weekend drives.

Wow, very supporting/constructive feedback so far keep them coming. The car would be sold with a US title so people should have less of a problem registering in their respective states.

Some of these cars can be bought for less than 5,000 Euros so that's why I think there is a biz case. I could ship in a container more than one to reach economies of scale.
I have gear head relatives in Spain who could help me allocating decent vehicles.

Inspiration, The Texan Peugeot 205 GTI:

That's exactly the essence of this venture, most of us could justify a $10K toy car and easy to sell the idea to significant others.

^I would not import beat up rally cars, just daily drivers 200K Kms max, Peugeot 205 GTI, Seat 600, Mini Morris, etc. Then US customer could opt to convert to rally car.

Sorry this would not be part of the portfolio, way more than $10K, anyhow for your visual pleasure let me introduce the Ferrari of rally cars, la "Lancia Delta Integrale Evoluzione II".

That little Abarth would be a awesome beast! Still prefer the old Cosworth Escorts myself, but either would be easy to park and use less gas than the wrx.
