On a semi-related note, and because I am new and cannot post new topics, is an EJ253 for an 05 Outback the same as an EJ253 from a 2008 Impreza? I have to replace my engine and I have found several of these local.

That is exactly what I wanted to hear. Does anyone know if the electronics will just clip right in? Same harness?

The 05 impreza ej253 is not the same as the 08 impreza ej253. No avls system on 05. I suspect this is the same for the outback. I would look into this or prepare to get the ecu and engine harness with the donor engine.

Drat. Not what I wanted to hear. Texas is not the home of the Subaru, so choices down here are limited.

So the 05-07 Impreza uses the same EJ253? and 08-10 uses a different EJ253? Is that right? I am just trying to find the most compatible model. I am looking for a "drop in", if possible.

Edit: Just confirmed that the 2006 2.5i got the AVLS and mine is still the old model.

If the price is right you should be able to swap heads and intake and run it that way. All depends on what is wrong with your 05 I suppose.

Also....make sure to confirm that, I've not done it but believe it to be correct.

Just caught this the 'SB" was deleted out while correcting a error on my iPhone sorry for the confusion.

So, is the 2005 the same as the 2006 and 2007 EJ253? No AVLS? I found some good 06 and 07 motors locally.

the 2005 stands alone in a several ways. unlike 2004 and older, it is drive by wire and has the larger intake manifold (and intake ports) but doesn't have AVLS like 2006+. and there are more differences that just those...

The 05 Ej253 has a slightly different internal layout hence the water pump relocation, oil pan change and exhaust manifold design. you can use a 05 EJ253 and swap over the pan to the 2006+ so you could run the newer layout if you chose to do such.

IF you are finding well priced 06+ EJ253s I would go that route

Good to know. If my heads are good and I am doing a head gasket change on the new motor, I could just swap heads and oil pan and use an EJ253 shortblock right?

Sorry for all of the questions, I am a classic VW guy and know them inside and out, but this is new territory.

One other thing to consider is that the pistons from the 05 rs are different compared to the 06+ rs pistons. The 06 pistons have a raised section on both sides of the piston to raise compression so remember that when and if you swap your 05 rs heads over to the 06+ rs short block

Well, 05 engine is out. The 06 engine is going in tomorrow. I had to change the oil pan, the oil pick-up and the splash shield under the pan. I am putting the intake from my 05 on the 06 engine, and I am using all of my electronics. I had to pay a $200 core, but I am thinking of keeping the other engine. It has a good throttle body, intake, coils, and heads.

Ok. Just found that there are extra connectors on the heads on the 06. Crap. So if I leave them disconnected, will it just default to one or the other and still work or do I have to swap heads?

Ok so I just mounted it up without connecting the things on the head. I let it idle for like 10 minutes. I was able to drive it, and it was fine but after 30 minuets I started it and as soon as I put it in gear, it started to ping. It is fine as long as I don't let the idle drop. It looks like I may have to get the ECU and wiring harness from that other car. I should have done that when I was there.
