Default Breaking News: SMR team breaks tranny at OTC

Just got off the phone with Mike and he said that they blew their Tranny at Buttonwillow today after setting fastest time in the class. Apparently, they have another one being prepared and will try to get it in the car in time to get some laps in at Thunderhill.

If they don't run Thunderhill, then the class win is in jeopardy. I'll update if I hear any more news.

According to Mike (remember though, he is Gary's competition) Gary already had another trans to put in the car so it is just a matter of getting it put in on time. The only issue I see being a problem is they had 5 hours of travel time to Thunderhill and the tranny swap to get done by today. he clearly has teh support to get it done though.

I am hoping to get a call from Mike today with an update and if and when I do I'll post here right away.

Hello,

This is my first chance to log in since the excitement started. It's friday night and I'm heading to sleep before the last day of the OTC. Just to let y'all know, about the tranny, we come prepared. Winning an event like this requires being ready for anything, so we brought a spare junkyard tranny and Alex's motor as a backup.

I'm sure Gary will post an exciting story with all the gruelling details, but basically, he pulled onto the front straight, tried to shift, and discovered that the tranny had called it quits. We busted our butts working from about 3 pm to about 7 pm, when Buttonwillow Security came to us and said they were locking the gates in ten minutes. We had the racecar on jackstands, with the tranny out and in the trailer. Gary was in the process of building the junk tranny with the KAAZ diff from our original tranny. (have you ever torqued a ring gear to a diff with only your hands to hold the diff? I knew we should have brought the whole workbench with the vise!)

We stuck some wheels on the racecar, used zip ties to hold the axles in place, tied a rope from the car to the trailer, and pulled the car out to the access road for the track. There, we set up shop on the side of the road.

By about 12:30 in the morning, we had the new tranny built, the lash on the diff setup correctly, and the tranny installed in the motor. Cool. Ready to rock and roll? Hey wait a sec, what's under the car?

Gawddangit, tranny fluid. Coming out of the junkyard tranny at a rate of about a a cup a minute. Quick, drain the last of our Torco and KAAZ Tranny fluid into a bucket and pull the axles again. The leak turned out to be a bad axle seal on the "new" tranny. We had inspected all the seals and this one had looked fresh, but too bad it was the wrong size!!! We swapped the blown tranny's good axle seals onto the jy tranny and all seemed good. 1:30 AM and a quick test drive down Leardo Highway. All looks good. Time to haul butt to the nearest motel, get 4 hours of sleep, and truck 350 miles to Thunderhill Raceway.

We missed the two morning sessions due to the tranny repairs. But as Richard Holdner likes to say, we pulled the car out, "represented", and took the fastest time of the day for Unlimited 3.

But so many more nightmares occured during this weeklong event... more about those "good times" later. Right now, I need some sleep. We're heading out to the track for Day 7 in a few hours... We're 6 in 6 right now, working towards a clean sweep - fastest car in class at each event.

wow!

so it's cool the SOA and many others have supported this effort, but it would be nice to have some WRC mechanics on loan, eh?
